Understanding Amendments 8 & 9

Amendment 8

Definition: Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel or unusual punishment.

What it deals with: Bail, Fines, and Excessive punishments.

What it means: Your protected against being fined an unreasonable amount of money, protected against a harsh punishment, and lastly, it protects you from having a bail that is higher then necessary.

The 9th amendment

Definition: The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

What it deals with: The rights of people.

What it means: The amendment means that just because it isn't written in the constitution doesn't mean you can't do it.
