Week 1 Term 3 SFDS Newsletter

St Francis de Sales - 27 July 2021

TRACY'S MESSAGE

Kia Ora Ano

Welcome to term 3…It was, as always, wonderful to see so many smiling faces arriving at our school on Monday morning – very happy staff, learners and whānau. The energy was just amazing – our learners are in for a very busy term of learning!

We are very lucky to be part of such a supportive community who live the values of our school. This shines through in how calm our learners are and how happy they are to come to school. Thank you for trusting us with your tamariki.

We were very thankful for all of the feedback that we received from our reporting to whānau survey at the end of term 2. We would like to further work together with our learner and our whānau community to ensure that reporting from our Kaiako is timely, informative and valued.

We will be running our first community consultation on reporting to whānau – Thursday 26 August 6-7pm – you can bring along your completed whānau survey form that went home with mid-year reports. We ask that you please register your interest by emailing office@sfds.school.nz by Monday 23 August.

We are excited to have Sandra Buless back at our school full time. Sandra has started our new entrant class in Tāmure.

A reminder that our Matariki celebration breakfast is this Thursday morning at 7:30am – hope to see you all then. If you are able to help please flick me an email by tomorrow afternoon. We really appreciate our whānau taking the time to support our celebration.

A very special thank you to New World Island Bay for donating $200 of vouchers towards our celebration.

Next week I am very fortunate to be attending the New Zealand Principals' Federation Conference. I am excited to be able to share my learning when I return next Thursday morning.

Have a wonderful week and take care.

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear SFDS Whanau,

Welcome back to term 3, we hope you all had a restful school holiday.

As you were made aware earlier this year we had a vacancy on the board of trustees after Aaron Pratley moved out of Island Bay, the board after asking for feedback opted to select a new member to the BOT and we are pleased to announce that Ben Sutherland will join the board as a parent representative. Ben has two children at SFDS and has significant experience in governance including being a founding Trustee on Life Education. We are very pleased Ben has joined us, to continue to support and grow our school.

It’s been a busy 2 terms for the school and BOT, with lots of positive progress made. We are really encouraged by the energy in the our school in 2021 and this is a real credit to our great teachers and staff who continue to move our school forward and put our children first.

As a BOT we are always keen for feedback and involvement, so please get in touch.

Dan McGuinness

BOT Chairperson

DRS MESSAGE

We pray you all had a refreshing and restful break and are ready for another busy term.

SPCA cupcake day is on this Monday 2 August. We need as many people as possible to get baking and decorating this weekend, ready to donate cupcakes to our stall on Monday. These will be sold in the courtyard at 3pm. All funds raised will be donated to the SPCA.

Please bring the cupcakes in a container labelled with any allergens noted clearly e.g. if the baking includes nuts, eggs, wheat, soy etc or is dietary friendly.

Baptism invitation

Last year we were thrilled to have 5 children baptised through a school programme and would like to do this again this term. Baptism is the first holy sacrament on a person's faith journey and is seen as the sacrament of admission to the faith, bringing sanctifying grace to the person being baptised.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the sacrament of baptism this year, please email vanessa.mccormack@sfds.school.nz for more information.

PSL NEWS

SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR PSL ANNUAL QUIZ NIGHT!!!! FRIDAY 17 SEPTEMBER!!!!!!

OLYMPIC QUIZ

This is our next fundraiser for which the kids will learn answers to questions about the Olympics! Lots of the kids are buzzing at school with the excitement of the games and it's great to see how many kids already know the answers to all of their questions - many thanks to you as parents and caregivers for supporting this.

The quiz will be run at school next Monday 2 August. Hopefully they have started finding sponsors to raise funds by collecting money for correct quiz question answers. The funds raised will go towards turfing the middle court which will mean no more annoying giant puddles after the rain!

All the information, including the questions, were sent home with the kids last term. These were also emailed to families and can be found on the school app. If you would like a new hard copy, please see the school office.

PSL DISCO!

Put your dancing shoes on! The school disco is on THURSDAY 5 AUGUST - Tickets already purchased are still valid for this new date. Disco tickets have been re-opened on Kindo - if you haven't already purchased a ticket get in quick.

If you can volunteer to help, please email Lee Taylor-Hal on the following email.

lee.taylor-hall@anz.com . Any help is much appreciated.

SARAH'S MESSAGE

REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY

Well done to Lola D (year 7) and Logan P (year 5) who both competed in the Regional Cross Country in week 10 last term. This was an amazing achievement, and we are really proud of them both. Thank you to Dan N and Elijah S who went and ran as Logan's buddies - a great display of our school values.

SCHOOL TALENT SHOW

We held the final of our School Talent Show last term. We were really impressed and proud of all the 37 Tangaroa and Papatuanuku students who shared their talents with us. It takes courage to perform in front of a stage and they should be proud of themselves as well. The final was held in our church and the following students were awarded a placing:

Tangaroa: 1st - PJ H, 2nd - Rosaria M, 3rd - Emmett C

Papatuanuku: 1st - Maeve HC, 2nd - Lily M and Lilly M, 3rd - Willow SE
