Planning for 2017-2018

Tamanend Principal, Mrs. Leatherbarrow met with leaders from Student Council and National Junior Honor Society today to talk about plans and even a theme for the new school year. Two ideas from our meeting appear later in this newsletter: ideas for new after-school clubs and opportunities to be the Tamanend Tiger. Students, be sure to check out this and all newsletters for opportunities throughout the year!

7th Grade Open House

On August 24th from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., we welcome our 7th graders and their parents to our Open House. Please arrive at the main entrance (by the U.S. Flag). Schedules and locker assignments will be shared and tours, courtesy of our Student Council and NJHS, will be available. Also, if you pre-ordered your school supplies, those will also be available in the cafeteria.

Any schedules not picked up will be sent home by U.S. Mail at the end of the day on August 24th. The Parent and Student Portals which provide schedule information will open on August 24th at 4 p.m..

Any school supplies not picked up will be available in the Main Office starting Monday, August 28 through August 31 from 7 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If you are not able to pick up your pre-ordered supplies before the start of school, they will be in your homeroom on the first day of school.

8th & 9th Grade Schedule Pickup Day

8th & 9th graders are encouraged to pick up their schedules on August 24th between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Cafeteria. Students should enter the cafeteria using the exterior patio doors (see photo) that lead to the Cafeteria. Returning 8th & 9th graders will not have access to the rest of the building on this day as it is the 7th graders' day to discover their lockers and classrooms. Thank you for your understanding.

Any schedules not picked up will be sent home by U.S. Mail at the end of the day on August 24th. The Parent and Student Portals which provide schedule information will open on August 24th at 4 p.m.. Any school supplies not picked up will be available in the Main Office starting Monday, August 28 through September 1 from 7 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If you are not able to pick up your pre-ordered supplies before the start of school, they will be in your homeroom on the first day of school.

A Note on Staying Connected

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Since our mission statement is titled "Tamanend Together" and the long-standing name of our newsletter is Tamanend Connections, it is important that we share with you the many ways in which you can stay in the know on all things Tamanend.

First, if someone you know who has a student enrolled at Tamanend for the 2017-2018 school year did NOT receive this newsletter via email, that means that they do not have a current and accurate email address in the Portal. It is important to always make sure Portal demographics are up to date and accurate.

If you (or someone you know) does not know how to get into the Portal, please click here and follow the directions under "Portal Help." The Portal is an important tool for parents and guardians. Throughout the year you can use the Portal to view current grades, attendance, immunizations, state assessment scores, and more. This is also where you can update your email address and phone number as well as emergency contact information for your student.

Your student also has their own access to the Portal (please do not share your parent portal access). Students should click here for an informational screencast to learn how to access the Portal. The screen-cast can help both parents and students access the Portal by smart phone.

As Principal, one of the things I hear myself say quite often is "there is always something happening and to look forward to at Tamanend." In addition to using our newsletter to help you plan and stay connected, we hope you will follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and download the free CBSD app (see below for links to all three).

Finally, staying connected by newsletter, Twitter, Facebook, the CBSD App and email is great, but nothing beats actually being here! Please follow our calendar and upcoming events and join us as we celebrate learning, talent, service, and so much more. We encourage you to volunteer (stay tuned for emailed sign ups), attend, and participate in Tamanend events such as Parent Council, Back to School Night, concerts, athletic events, our magazine drive, Kelly Anne Dolan Day, Relay for Life, our musical, dances and our Freshman Day and Dance. We hope to see you. And thank you in advance for sharing with us your amazing children!

Sincerely,

Cheryl R. Leatherbarrow

A Note about Getting Involved

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

As you start thinking about your return to school, be reminded of all the different ways that you can get involved at Tamanend. Opportunities include music groups, athletics, student council, along with many different academic and service clubs. If you are planning on participating in a fall sport, you must register on Family ID and complete CIPPE form section 5 & 6 dated after June 1, 2017 and signed and stamped by a doctor.

Parents, you too can get involved at Tamanend. The following sign up genius will show volunteer opportunities to support school activities and functions. Please be sure to check it periodically as we update it as new opportunities arise. Click here for the 2017-2018 parent volunteer sign up genius. (The access code is tms.) Volunteering offers you the chance to be part of your child's middle school experience while helping us provide many wonderful opportunities that will enrich your child's years at Tamanend.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jonathan T. Boyle

Assistant Principal

Summer Reading

All middle school students in our district are expected to read throughout the entire year. The state standard recommends twenty-five books per year! Over the summer, all students entering grades seven, eight, and nine must read at least two books. As a Tamanend Community, we encourage all parents to join the students and staff to read our selected "One School, One Book"--Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick. This book fulfills the CB List requirement. Students' second book is of their own choosing with parent/guardian approval.

When students begin the new school year, they will be required to complete an activity related to one of the two required books. Students should make sure they have completed the reading of the two books before returning to school.

Student Emergency Contacts & Information

Each year, the Central Bucks School District asks our families to fill out a Student Emergency & Information Form. Parents/Guardians can take care of this now and we ask that you complete your family’s Student Emergency & Information Form online by September 20, 2017.

The online form will ask you to confirm and/or update the following:

  • Demographic Information
  • Emergency Contacts
  • Health Information, including permission for emergency care and analgesic administration
  • Media Release Preferences (Please note that if you click on "no" for media release, your student will not be featured in our Tamanend Connections newsletter.)

Click here to be directed to your Parent Portal account to complete the Census Verification form. Thank you for taking the time to update this important information.

NOTE: For detailed information about this process, including a User Guide, please click here.

If you do not have a Parent Portal account, please follow this link to request one.

If you need support, please email parentportal@cbsd.org.

Who Wants to be the Tamanend Tiger!

During our Summer Leadership Meeting, we decided it would be exciting to open up the opportunity for any interested students to be our mascot. So, if it has been your dream to be the Tamanend Tiger, now is your chance to tell us why. Complete this Tiger Mascot application survey. Approved surveys will be used to select students to be our Tiger at pep rallies, assemblies, 6th Grade Orientation and more! Go get 'em, Tigers!

Tamanend Dances

Tamanend dances are for currently enrolled and attending Tamanend students ONLY. Bringing or inviting “guests” to any of our school dances at Tamanend is prohibited. Students need to show their current Tamanend Middle School I.D. as part of admittance. In order to participate in any after-school event, including dances, a student must have arrived to school no later than 10:30 a.m. on that day. Dress for the Fall Dance on October 6th is casual. Tamanend Dress Standards apply to all Tamanend events.

Freshman Dance

Freshman Day and Dance are tentatively slated for June 8th, 2018. These events are only for currently enrolled ninth grade Tamanend students as they are a special time set aside for our Freshmen to enjoy a final remembrance of their middle school years. You will notice, it is called the “Freshman Dance” and not the “Freshman Prom.” While our Freshman Dance is truly special, there is plenty of time in our students' lives for prom dresses, tuxedos, limos, and fancy proposals for dates. Whether students arrive at the dance in groups, by themselves, or in pairs, they all experience a wonderful time. Please remind your child of this fact when discussion of Freshman Day begins.

Bus Assignment & Information

Students who ride the bus to Tamanend may go on the CB Find My Bus webpage to learn their bus assignment and information on August 21st.

Gym Uniforms and Locks

All students must wear a CB (or old TMS) gym uniform for their Physical Education classes. Uniforms and locks will be able to be purchased online through our My Payments Plus program starting in mid August. The cost of uniform items and locks for the 2017-2018 school year are as follows:

  • T-shirt = $2.40
  • Shorts = $4.20
  • Lock = $5.70

You will receive an email with directions on how to purchase any of these items. If for some reason you are not able to purchase them online, you will have to write a check out to Central Bucks School District for $12.30. Please include your student's name on the memo line. These will be collected in gym class on the first day your student has gym. Please note, if your student does not have gym until second semester, they can still purchase the items needed online and they will receive their uniform and lock the first day of their gym class in the second semester.

Do you have a note?

That is something that our teachers will not have to ask your student(s) after an absence if you call our attendance hotline or email our attendance mailbox. Please take advantage of these more efficient means of communicating excused absences. The phone number and email are listed below.

Ideas for New After School Clubs

Mrs. Leatherbarrow always says, "If you are going home on the bus from middle school every day, you are not doing middle school right." We really want our students to be involved in school even after the school day ends. This year we have the opportunity to start new after-school activities. Student Council and NJHS Leaders brainstormed some club ideas. We would like students to complete the club survey to let us know what clubs interest them. This survey will close on September 15th at 4 p.m.

Tamanend Café

Our Tamanend Café serves hot and cold breakfasts and lunches throughout the school year. In case your student forgets their lunch or doesn't have time for breakfast, it is a great idea to have a backup plan... To put money into an account for your student, click here. It is also possible to set up low balance reminder or an auto-reload plan so that your student always has a positive balance in his/her account.

Required Immunizations

As a reminder, the current immunization requirements for the 2017-2018 school year continue to be as follows:

Children in kindergarten through 12th grade are required to have the following vaccines:

  • 4 doses DtaP – diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis
  • 3 doses Polio
  • 2 doses MMR – measles, mumps, rubella
  • 3 doses Hepatitis B
  • 2 doses Varicella (chicken pox)

Children entering 7th grade are also required to have:

  • 1 dose Meningococcal Conjugate (meningitis)
  • 1 dose DtaP – diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis

To check the immunization status of your student, go to the Portal and click on the Health tab.

Please note, the Departments of Health and Education have not made any changes to the religious, philosophical, or medical exemptions currently provided in the regulations.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Corinne Sikora at 267.893.2021.

Volunteer Required Paperwork

Pennsylvania law requires all persons having direct contact with school children must obtain background checks and clearances. If you are planning on being in a Central Bucks school during the 2017-2018 school year for any reason, you will need to go to Volunteer Required Paperwork, and complete what is needed to obtain your Photo Volunteer ID Card. You will need that ID Card and a photo ID to enter a CB school.

Once you have the paperwork started, please click here to sign up for various volunteer opportunities available this year (use tms as the password).

Stay Tuned for an Emailed Volunteer Opportunity Signup!

Free & Reduced Lunch/Breakfast Application

Families can access the online application for Free & Reduced Meals by clicking here. The application must be submitted each year. If you are eligible, please apply now so that your student is ready to eat and learn on the first day of school, August 31.

Parking Lot Safety

It is highly recommended that parents/guardians of students who walk or take the bus have their students walk or take the bus. On days, when students need extra help getting to school, please consider driving them to their assigned bus stop and wait together in the car until the bus arrives. A student will never be marked tardy if they arrive by bus.

If parents/guardians decide to drive students to school, please plan enough travel time to allow for safety and congestion on Stuckert Road and in our school parking lot. The speed limit in our lot is 15 mph.

The following is a mapping of how the student drop-off works in our parking lot. Drop off should only happen along the sidewalk indicated by paw prints on the map. For your safety and the safety of our students, please follow these directions and do not drop your student off on Stuckert Road, the Visitor's Parking area, or in the middle of the Main Parking Area. Thank you for your support and careful driving.

Arrival to School

For supervision and safety reasons, students may not be dropped off at school before 7:10 a.m. If you are driving your student to school and arrive before 7:10, please remain in your car with your student until 7:10 a.m.

Back to School Nights

We look forward to meeting all of our parents and guardians during Back to School Nights. 7th Grade BTSN is on September 19th at 7 p.m. 8th & 9th Grade BTSN is on September 27nd at 7 p.m. To help with parking and congestion on Stuckert Road, we encourage parents and guardians to consider carpooling if at all possible.

TMS Parent Council

Thursday, Sep. 28th, 9am

Tamanend Middle School

Parent Council is an open meeting where all parents are welcome to attend to learn more about Tamanend Middle School. Parent Council typically meets on the third Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. There is no obligation to attend all Parent Councils and there are no elected positions. Parent Council is a forum for parents and school leaders to learn from and with each other, together.

At this month's Parent Council, we will give an overview of Tamanend and talk about topics of parent interest for Parent Council meetings throughout the year.

RSVPs are enabled for this event.
