May 2019 Newsletter
A Year in Review
The 2018-2019 school year is coming to an end. At this time of year, school is a busy place - at Creekside, we have the privilege of celebrating with the end of the year musical performances, the school musical, The Music Man Jr., and Track & Field just to name a few. As a staff at Creekside, we are taking time to celebrate the great instructional happenings we have been able to implement and the growth we have seen as a result . As a building we hope your students have been able to come home telling you about our new math program or our A.V.I.D. program, being able to participate in our RESPECT day, or celebrating being on Honor Roll or perhaps even sharing stories about the “cool thing they did in class”. Throughout this year, we have continued to place an emphasis on differentiation practices to assist in meeting the students’ individual learning needs. We have focused on small group instruction and have used questioning practices to support and challenge students as they work towards their goals.
Our student services team has worked diligently this year to support students in their social emotional needs. Students are invited to be a part of Connect lessons during skills labs when our social worker or counselor work with students through mini lessons on various topics. We have also been able to offer students opportunities through our S.O.A.R. program (Student’s Owning an Active Role in their learning), where students receive support with academics and executive functioning skills. We also continue to celebrate student success through our Student of the Month Breakfast and our new quarterly Honors Recognition. We hope that our Creekside Flyby has been a beneficial way to engage you in what is happening within the school. We are still a month away, but we wish you a great summer.
Please be sure to Register!
Online registration information will be sent home on Monday, April 8. Every current student returning to District 200 needs to register. If you need assistance with this process, stop by Creekside, and we are happy to help you through the process. We have computers and info ready for you!

Washington DC Trip for 2019-20 8th Grade Students
Next year's 8th grade class will have the opportunity of a life time to travel to Washington DC with CMS in May 2020. We have parent meetings scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th and 16th from 6:30 - 7:00 PM in the CMS cafeteria.
May is an exciting month for 8th graders.
In an effort to reward student behavior, motivation and achievement for 4th quarter, the 8th grade team has decided to offer some end-of-year incentives. Eligible students will get a chance to attend 2 additional field trips for the end of the year. We have a trip planned to Cantigny Park on May 13th. We are also planning a last-day-of-school event which is still TBD after promotion practice. To be eligible for these rewards, students must pass all classes with a C or better. They also cannot have any office referrals or detentions. Please see the green form that was sent home for more information.
Another major event in May is the 8th grade dance, sponsored by the PTO. Please see the purple sheet that was sent home for more information.
Eighth grade promotion will take place on May 30th at 7:00 PM. Students should arrive at WHS at 6:30 PM to find their group and begin lining up.
May 30th will also be the last day for 8th graders. Students should NOT come to school on May 31st.
The 8th grade team has enjoyed working with this group of students this past year. We wish them great success in their future endeavors.
Reality Store
Reality Story Friday, May 17 at 8:30 am: Our 8th graders are looking forward to participate in the Reality Store. Here students partake in a simulated game of “Life” where they experience what it is like to pay bills, buy a home or car, and even encounter those unexpected things that just happen. Students choose their career though the 21st Century Skills class this year. If you would like to be a part of this, please email Mr. Wheatley at mwheatley@wcusd200.org.

Let’s Make a Difference
Many of us have been talking about the recent passing of AJ Freund and wondering how we can help. Please see the attached picture below. A family in Crystal Lake who have fostered and adopted kids are collecting items in honor of AJ. When children are removed and enter foster care, they often leave with nothing. The goal is to provide them with duffel bags full of necessities and comfort items to help them with this difficult transition.
Please consider donating some of the items listed below. You can drop them off in Mrs. Hettermann’s office at Creekside and we can get them to the family in charge of stuff the duffel.
Thank you for your consideration.
Outdoor Classroom
Garden Club students sorted through 305 pounds of plastic caps and lids to ensure our collection was free of metal and unacceptable plastics (fast food lids for instance). These were collected by staff and students over 14 weeks from November through February. These caps were melted into three, 4-foot benches that will be used for part of the seating for our outdoor classroom (the patio area outside the main stairwell). You can see them (benches with the backs) now along with the long cinder block and composite board benches (complements of McGinness). It's beginning to take shape on that side of the stairwell.
Thanks for all your support, collecting of caps and considering your plastic use.
