A Note From Officer Kendall, School Liaison -
With a new school year beginning, I would like to quickly address a topic that creates more confusion and upset than almost any other school issue – Parking.
The parking and drop off/pick up areas for students at all the elementary schools are a challenge. The recent changes at Lake Superior and Four Corners Elementary Schools should make it much safer and easier for students, parents, bus drivers and staff.
Unfortunately, the other schools must deal the setup that has existed for years and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. Each school has its own particular challenges but there are common rules and systems that apply to all the schools.
With that in mind, I would like to address some areas to increase safety and traffic flow around the Elementary Schools.
First, there is no parking in all bus areas, designated drop off/pick up areas, fire zones, or any other area that is posted no parking or parking is never allowed (e.g. fire hydrants). If you park in these areas you will likely get ticketed.
Second, when you drop off or pick up your student, pull as far forward in the drop off/pick up areas as possible. This will help avoid traffic backing up and make it easier for other parents to get their students. You might consider setting up a meeting spot away from the immediate area next to the school for dropping off/picking up your student.
Third, if you need to go into the school for any reason, park in a designated area and then go in. Even if you think you only have to run in for a second, it is never a second, and you are making the school less safe by leaving your car to block other traffic.
The bottom line is that we all, students, parents, staff, and the community, are responsible for keeping all the students, not just our own, safe. Following the parking laws, paying attention to pedestrians and other vehicles around the schools, and being respectful of other parents and their students will make getting your students to and from school a much safer event.
If you have questions or concerns about this or any other school issue, I can be best reached via e-mail at michael.kendall@superior.k12.wi.us.
