STEM-sational
WCS is committed to providing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities for our students! In July, we sent a team to the Smithsonian Science Education Center Summer Institute. Shout Out! to Associate Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Wilson, Executive Director of Secondary Education David Lyndon, Elm City MS Principal Will Pope, Forest Hills MS Math and Science Teacher Sunil Dutt and Executive Director of the Wilson Education Partnership Robin Williams for representing WCS so well! College Support
Shout Out! to Wilson Community College for offering scholarships to three of our graduates who were a part of The Gentlemen’s Agreement. We are so proud of Isaac Farmer, Isiah Davis and Melvin Savage, and we hope they are having a great year at Wilson Community College. The Gentlemen’s Agreement is an achievement and mentoring program that supports African American males and is led by Maurice Barnes. “This relationship with the college is one I take a lot of pride in as a graduate of the institution and a former employee. I know what this school can do just looking at my own story,” Barnes said. “We wanted to say to the students that as they graduate from the program, that we have invested in you, and we wanted to have opportunities for you.” Photo credit The Wilson Times and article link.
Dental Clinic
WCS is grateful to the Wilson County Health Department and the Wilson County Commissioners for working with us to provide dental services to our students in need! We will keep you posted on when the dental clinic will open. Excerpt from Wednesday’s story in The Wilson Times - Wilson County students will have more access to dental care after commissioners unanimously approved funding for a mobile dental clinic Monday. The Wilson Area School Health Dental Program is a joint venture between the Wilson County Health Department and WCS. The program will provide quality clinical and preventative dental services to school-aged children and pregnant women in Wilson County who have Medicaid or are uninsured, officials said. The program will go hand-in-hand with the Wilson Area Student Health Clinics at Forest Hills MS and Beddingfield HS.
PE Praise
Shout Out! to our Physical Education (PE) Teachers, Athletic Director Jimmy Tillman, Toisnot MS Principal Wendy Sullivan and Toisnot Custodian Tim Farmer from Jerry Honeycutt with ADA Sports and Rackets - “I just wanted to say what an honor it was to present on Aug. 15 at your district PE workshop at Toisnot. Everything was first class - Joanna Farriss helping me with setup and travel, all of the awesome PE teachers, Tim Farmer assisting with cleanup, and everyone helping me load up the equipment. I am fortunate to present around the country, and this was one of the best professional development workshops that I have ever been a part of. I commend your district, schools, employees and community. I was so very impressed with all of your PE teachers! I really appreciate you valuing PE and providing professional development. I hope that I am welcomed back to present next year! Lastly, your district is very fortunate to have Joanna Farriss!"
