Northbridge Public Schools

February 2023 Issue

Hello NPS Families,

We hope you are all doing well through these winter months. February is a great month to think about spreading kindness. Random acts of kindness, whether big or small, can make a great impact, not only on the people around us who we choose to share our kind gestures with, but also within ourselves. Just as within society as a whole, focusing on gratitude and choosing kindness within our schools creates a positive culture that is more pleasant for everyone. We strive within our Advisory lessons and our PBIS frameworks to keep these ideals in focus in Northbridge Public Schools.

We'd also like to take this time to remind you that all schools will be closed from Feb. 20 - Feb. 24 in observance of Presidents Day and February Recess.

Transitions within NPS

Another focus of ours at NPS in the month of February is transitions. Transition often means change and although change can be exciting and bring about opportunities for growth and new adventures, change can also bring with it questions or concerns. Our students transition from class to class, from one grade to another, and - one of the bigger transitions they make - from one school building to another. In our district this happens for our fifth graders when they transition up to NMS for sixth grade, and for our eighth graders when they transition up to NHS for ninth grade.

In an effort to make these transitions as smooth as possible for our students, families, and school staff, we have begun the process of planning for our fifth to sixth grade transition and will share updates on that as they become available. To prepare current and future eighth graders who'll be moving up to NHS, Mrs. Stockwell and Mr. Tracey, NHS administrators, joined the 1/19 NMS Parent Meeting to share all that NHS has to offer. If you missed that meeting, you can watch the recordings of it here: 1/19 parent meeting-part 1 - 1/19 parent meeting-part 2. Scrolling through the NHS tab of the NPS website to familiarize yourself with Northbridge High is another great way to prepare for that transition: https://www.nps.org/high-school

A group of NHS staff members & students visited our eighth graders at NMS on February 3rd. Academic information was shared with our students by NHS Guidance in our auditorium. In our gym were tables set up by NHS students who shared their experiences and knowledge of the clubs and extracurriculars that NHS has to offer. In our library some NHS students held a Q&A in which our 8th graders could ask all the burning questions they have about being a student at Northbridge High.

On February 9th, the first of our eighth grade homeroom groups spent a school day shadowing an NHS student. This provides a great opportunity for students to get a real feel for what it's like to attend NHS. They learn about the NHS Freshman Academy, meet some of the teachers and upperclassmen, and learn of the many academic and extracurricular opportunities available to them at Northbridge High. These visits will continue with more eighth grade homerooms visiting NHS with more shadow days scheduled on 2/14 and on 2/28.

SEL CORNER:

SEL & Transitions

Transitions can be tough for all of us. Changes to routines, schedules, and daily activities can have us sometimes feeling uneasy and dysregulated. However, talking about upcoming transitioning can make us feel more at ease. Below are two resources designed for parents supporting students making the elementary to middle school transition and the middle to high school transition.

Spreading Love and Kindness

With February being National Kindness Month and Valentine's Day falling in the middle of it, this time of year acts as an opportunity to center both love and kindness.

Here are some resources aimed at spreading love and kindness this month:

Below is a love themed activity to go along with a kindness themed calendar. They have some great prompts to have us start thinking a little more positive, acting a little more kind, and leading with a little more love this month.

Take care and be kind,

Big picture
Tina and Sharyn have a lot to look forward to in February. We begin the month excited to have had representatives from District Attorney Early's office present to families and students about Internet Safety. This is an issue that is close to both of our hearts and we are pleased to be able to share this valuable information with our families. As we move toward vacation, Sharyn can't wait to spend time visiting with some distant family. Tina and her family are planning to spend some relaxing down-time together to catch up. We wish you all a happy vacation week and a February filled with kindness!
