Instructional Coach and ESL Specialist: Children’s Aid College Prep Charter School (NY)

The Children’s Aid College Prep Charter School is a Children’s Aid Society community school whose mission is to prepare elementary school students for success in middle school, high school, college and life by providing them with a rigorous instructional experience; addressing their physical, emotional and social needs; fostering a sense of pride and hope; and serving as a safe and engaging community hub.


ESL Specialist:

The Children’s Aid Society Community Charter School offers a rigorous curriculum, fully aligned with the Common Core of State Standards, for students in small class-sizes and with structured behavioral and emotional supports. Instructional Coach:

The Instructional Coach, having both content and instructional expertise, will work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning and teacher practice. The Instructional Coach will work with teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need. As an advisor to the teachers, the Instructional Coach is responsible for three main areas: a) observing instructional delivery and providing feedback to enhance and support the development of each teacher's content area b) supporting teachers in the design of units and lessons for the development of their year-long curriculum, and c) analyzing data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessment to meet students' needs. The Public Prep Network (PPN) is a nonprofit organization that develops single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and data-driven instruction. Making Waves Foundation was founded in 1989 as a mentoring program to address the disparity in educational opportunities for low-income students in Richmond, CA. For decades, through comprehensive programming and services, Making Waves has helped prepare and support first-generation college students to graduate from competitive institutions across the country.

In 2007, the foundation opened the Making Waves Academy Middle School, a charter school offering a rigorous fifth to eighth grade academic program and comprehensive services for students and families. Chief Academic Officer: Success Preparatory Academy (LA)

Success Preparatory Academy, a K-8 charter school in New Orleans, is looking for a Chief Academic Officer (CAO) to bring them into the top five of charter schools in the Recovery School District. The CAO will coach the academic directors, each of whom are responsible for coaching and managing teachers. In year one, the CAO will be responsible for creating the new framework for coaches and teachers to improve their practice. In year two, the CAO will be responsible for delving into curricular choices.


Success Preparatory Academy has come a long way since they opened their doors in August 2009 with 240 students in grades Kindergarten-3rd grade. In 2000, IDEA Public Schools opened the doors of our first campus in Donna, TX, with the mission of ensuring that all of our students are ready to succeed in college and as citizens. Our flagship campus in Donna graduated its first class in 2007, sending 100% of our scholars to college, a tradition that has continued for the past 7 years as we’ve expanded from a single campus in the Rio Grande Valley to 36 schools serving nearly 20,000 kids in the RGV, San Antonio, and Austin. Responsibilities may include the organization and management of finances, state and federal grant reporting, human resources, facility maintenance and operations, transportation, technology, vendor relationships, student enrollment data and compliance with staff.

  • Founding Teaching Team: Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Special Education - Collegiate Hall is searching for members of it's founding teaching team. Operations Manager - The Operations Manager is entrusted with advancing the mission of the school through the development and implementation of a budget, coordination of external and internal operations, and fundraising and grant writing all of which will be done in collaboration with the Head of School. The Director of Operations is chargedwith managing the operational side of the school, from financial management to vendor relationships to facilityoperations, as well as managing and maximizing the impact of potential Office Assistant. Dean of Scholar Advancement – The Dean of Scholar Advancement is responsible for overseeing the pre-referral andreferral process of special education, as well as overseeing the creation of, and execution of the IEP process for specialeducation students. As the Special Education teacher and Coordinator, the Dean of Scholar Advancement is responsible for implementing individual education plans for all qualified students.


Lead Kinder Teacher (Literacy, Literacy, Math, Science/Social Studies) – A lead teacher takes responsibility for the high academic achievement and character development of every child in his or her classroom while working as apositive, supportive team player. Teachers are entrusted with advancing the mission of the school through the development of a standards-aligned curriculum, responsiveness to feedback provided and collaboration with the Head of School on areas of instructional and/or curricular need at the school. College Bound Academy Teachers will be departmentalized beginning in Kindergarten. There will be one Math teacher, two literacy teachers and one Science/Social Studies teacher in each grade. As a founding teacher, lead teachers will be responsible for creating curriculum (with supplemental resources) and fine-tuning systems implemented in College Bound Academy’s founding year.

It’s Time to Listen to our Nation’s High School Students: Join the Emotion Revolution

This April, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Born This Way Foundation (co-founded by Lady Gaga) launched a national campaign, the Emotion Revolution to engage high school students in a conversation about how to create schools and communities where emotions matter. We want to amplify the national conversation about improving student and teacher wellness and school climate.


Emotions matter and matter a great deal in school, especially among high school students. They can either help students or derail them from achieving their goals. The question: Are students feeling more stress and boredom than excitement and curiosity? How are these emotions influencing their engagement, their desire to study, their ability to perform at their best on tests, and their future goals? The answers cannot come solely from a top-down policy, or from guessing. Real solutions require hearing from the students themselves.


That’s why, with the support of dozens of key partners, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Facebook, we are launching the Emotion Revolution with a national 7-minute survey for high school students so that we can learn about hundreds of thousands of high school students’ current and hoped-for emotional experiences in school. We will then hold a summit at Yale featuring youth leaders from across the United States, Lady Gaga, and Yale President, Peter Salovey, where we will unveil the findings, give over 200 youth the opportunity to speak out about their ideas for creating improved learning environments with key educators, academics, and policy makers, and create momentum around the national SEL movement. In addition, with support from Facebook, we will provide high school youth and educators with free resources – activities to promote greater health and well being and more positive school climates.


Toward that end, our immediate goal is to hear from 1 million high school students from public, charter, and private schools across the nation. Gathering data from students in each state will strengthen the scientific understanding of how we can most effectively help bridge the gap between how students currently feel and how they want to feel.

The School Law Institute

The School Law Institute at Columbia University is a national education program available for graduate credit, on a non-credit basis, and in some states for continuing education credits. The Institute brings to Teachers College a diverse collection of the nation’s leading authorities on education law, policy, and practice. It explores significant recent developments in school law and their impact on policy and practice at the federal, state, district, and school levels. For over 25 years at Harvard and Columbia, this five-day summer Institute has provided policy analysts, policy makers, researchers, new and career educators, and charter-school professionals (board members, administrators, and teachers) with the knowledge and skills they need to advance their educational agendas and minimize legal problems. Under the guidance of Teachers College Professor of Law and Education Jay Heubert and Massachusetts Department of Education General Counsel Rhoda Schneider, Institute participants enjoy stimulating, informative, and often inspiring conversations that draw on the multi-disciplinary perspectives of law, policy, and practice. Participants learn from an unusually diverse and interesting group of peers, including: scholars, policy analysts, school administrators, teachers, policymakers, advocates, and lawyers from around the U.S. and the tri-state area. In 2015, the Institute will convene from July 13-17 in comfortable, air-conditioned conference space at Columbia Law School. Ninety-minute sessions will include presentations, large group discussions, small-group work, case studies, and simulations. Faculty will be available to talk with participants throughout the week.
