Counselor's Corner

September 2022

Welcome to the new school year!

Salamu-Alaikum Parents,

I hope you are doing well as you make your way through the first week of school!

Over the course of the school year, you will receive newsletters from me every 1-2 months. The purpose of these newsletters is to provide you with counseling program updates, SEL resources, and information to help support your child's holistic growth and development.

Please make sure to complete the Consent form linked at the end of the newsletter if you haven't already. This is the same form some of you completed during the supply drop off. This must be completed whether or not you give your child permission to participate in counseling sessions, if the need arises.

About Me

My name is Fatima Khan & I am so excited to be the Counselor at Tarbiyah Academy this year! I will be serving as the school counselor part-time, Wednesday-Friday.

I am a Nationally Certified Counselor & and Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. I received my MS in Clinical Mental health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University and my BS in Psychology and Human Development from the University of Maryland College Park.

I have worked as a Psychotherapist in outpatient mental health centers and private practice, and have experience working with various organizations including MPB Group and Kennedy Krieger Institute. Along with being the counselor at TA, I also work as a therapist with Muslim clients of all ages at Jackson Wellness Group. I'm lucky to have gotten the chance to work with children, adolescents, and adults dealing with various mental health issues and life problems, and look forward to bringing my experience to help facilitate the holistic growth of our young scholars at TA.

I love spending time in nature, drinking chai, reading, and traveling. I am also an artist and incorporate mindfulness, creativity, and art therapy techniques into my counseling work.

What is the TA Counseling Program?

As the Counselor this year, I will be working with students, staff, and community members in various ways. The following contains examples of some of the TA Counseling initiatives.

When & How to Refer Students For Counseling

Student behavioral issues and emotional problems can impact every aspect of their life including their learning. When students are exhibiting concerning behaviors or processing difficult life changes or emotions, you can fill out the counseling referral form below to request services including:

  • A Check-In with your student
  • A meeting to discuss student concerns
  • Assessment for individual counseling sessions
  • Request for group counseling
  • Resources to help your student at home

In order to request services, you must complete the Google Form below. After filling out the form, I will reach out to set up a meeting to discuss concerns and create a plan to help your scholar.

Counseling Consent

In order for students to participate in individual or group counseling sessions on a weekly basis (based on the counseling plan created after referral & evaluation), students need parental consent. ALL PARENTS must read the consent form and give/deny consent on the google form linked below. The document version of the form has been sent via email. Please note that consent is not needed for observations or check-ins.

What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning is an important part of a child's development, helping to teach life skills and attitudes that promote healthy identity development and overall wellbeing. This infographic explains the 5 competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. Learn more about SEL in this article
