The Second Grade Scoop
March 18th, 2017
Hello Second Grade Families,
Dear 2R Families,
Thank you to everyone who came out to Open House. It was great seeing you all and the students were very excited to show off their hard work! It is hard to believe that we are already onto the 3rd marking period. It seems like just yesterday the students were beginning their journey in 2nd grade. Be sure to read below about our fun week full of activities like Text Feature Surgery and our Book Award Show!

Math
We just wrapped up Unit 7 today of Math. The students have learned how to add multiple two-digit numbers together. They use Partial Sums addition to help them add the ones then the tens place. The students have also learned to look for "friendly numbers" while adding. For example, in 33+7, the students know that 3+7=10. In this unit, students also learned to estimate before measuring using their body parts as personal references.
In Unit 8, students will begin learning about shapes. They will learn to describe the shapes' attributes by talking about the number of sides, angles, vertices (corners/points) and right angles they see. Please be sure to read the Family Letter in the HomeLinks book next week for information about this unit.
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Pose one or two step number stories to your child.
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about shapes you see in everyday life. Discuss their amount of sides, angles, vertices, etc.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.
Reader's Workshop
To help us practice identifying text features, the students (or doctors) performed "Text Feature Surgery." The doctors suited up in their face masks and plastic gloves before beginning the challenging surgery. The surgery required them to examine Times For Kids Magazines and remove any text features they noticed. They glued these text features down into their surgery handbooks for future reference. After a long surgery, it was a success!
Writer's Workshop
We wrapped up our Writing About Reading unit on Friday with an Award Show to remember. Since the unit required students to write letters about books explaining why that book should be nominated for an award, we decided that it only made sense to hold an award show as our end-of-unit celebration.
The students each placed one of their nomination letters on their desk and a drawing of the book they nominated. The students traveled from one desk to the next reading nomination letters. In the end, each student had to vote for a book that interested them the most based on the nomination letters. The Boxcar Children and Todd's TV were deemed the winners!

Order Due Date - Saturday, April 29th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the March purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 10 free books for our classroom and a class set of book coupons, which will be sent home with the next catalogue. I will send home the April catalogue on Monday.
Please take a few moments to explore the April selection next week together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $8 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
