THE "NEW" HIGHWAY
When Florence Boulevard came into being in the 1950s, it was referred to by Florentines as the "new highway." Prior to its creation, vehicles leaving downtown Florence which were headed toward Shoals Creek and beyond traveled east on Tennessee Street, down the hill via the short stretch on what was called "Tennessee Cut" by the locals to Royal Avenue, went south a short distance to the East Florence business district and made a left turn onto Lee Highway/Huntsville Road. Then the vehicle continued through areas known, in order, Sweetwater, East Hill/Pine Ridge, and Weeden Heights before finally emerging onto a much straighter path where Huntsville Road and Florence Boulevard converge today. So, the "new highway" was obviously welcomed by travelers as a shorter, more direct route from downtown Florence to the somewhat open road toward points east.
