A Message From the Principal
Dear Parents,
In Mesechet Taanit it says, “Just as when Av begins we curtail joy, when Adar begins we increase joy.” How can we increase our joy as Adar begins?
Rav Pam suggests that Hashem gives us the answer in the Megillah as to how we can help ourselves feel happiness. He notes that much of the story of Purim, which results in great happiness for the Jewish people, revolves around the expression of gratitude. In the beginning of the sixth perek of the Megillah, King Achashverosh is awakened from his slumber and has his book of chronicles read to him. It is then that he is reminded about the episode where Mordechai saved him from Bigtan and Teresh, and devises a plan to recognize what Mordechai did by honoring him with the king’s clothing and horse. As we know, it’s that gesture which sets the scene for everything that follows. In fact, the growing field of Positive Psychology has demonstrated rather conclusively that gratitude and happiness are closely connected. Perhaps, then, the Megillah was trying to tell us long ago that we can increase our joy by recognizing the not-so-obvious goodness that one receives from others in our lives and from Hashem.
At YLS the relationship between our teachers, students, and parents is extraordinary. The gratitude I felt this week towards each of you, our parents, and towards Morah Rachael and Morah Sharona, was tremendous. Over and over again, I overheard parents expressing how much they value the deep and complete way Morah Rachael and Morah Sharona know their child. Over and over again I overheard Morah Rachael and Morah Sharona commenting how blessed they are to be working with dedicated and invested parents as partners in helping their students grow.
Thank you to our parents for entrusting your children to us and partnering with us to help them grow, and thank you to our teachers for knowing your students so completely and deeply. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to increase my joy in honor of Adar!
Shabbat Shalom,
Mrs. Becky Troodler
