"Fundamental 5"
We have shared thoughts and ideas on framing the lesson and the purpose for that being to provide students and ourselves, a reminder of the expectations for teaching and learning; we discussed working in the power zone and the many benefits of that. Last week we reviewed "frequent purposeful small group talk" which we actually started last year--that student-to-student talk about the learning. We discussed the importance of recognizing and reinforcing academic success as being so important to creating classroom environments that are nurturing, engaging, and empowering. Finally, we shared ideas about writing critically and were reminded that writing critically has a direct benefit to increasing overall literacy skills.
Ms. Rising, Mrs. Garcia, Mr. Johnson, and I are excited to see you implement these 5 actions in your day-to-day teaching. These 5 small, but critical actions have the potential to transform this campus as they make us more aware of how we execute our lessons and bring added rigor and relevance to students' learning. Thank you in advance for your dedication to their implementation.

Student of the Week
Below is a link to a shared document where you may list names of students to be considered. Bear in mind that we are running a week behind; we just recognized students for Week 2; nominations are now being taken for week 3, which was last week.

Progress Reports and Failing Grades
The administrators and Mr. Espinoza will be calling in students who are on the failure list. We will be visiting with them about their grades and responsibilities and asking what we can do to help them. These visits will be happening this week. If you have students being called to the office, this could be why.
SLO Timelines
Regarding SLOs
Remember that your needs assessment should be completed by Sept. 20 so that SLOs can be set.
- September - Align to Standards and Create Learning Objectives
- September/October -
- Develop/choose Assessment and Get Approval your appraiser

- Create Growth Target
- October 28 SLOs should be submitted in Eduporia
- September - April- Monitor Progress
Lunch Time
Once seated, we call students to the serving lines by table. This keeps the lines to a manageable length and students are served quickly. Those students waiting to be called have been monitoring their behavior well. Many are bringing books and sketch pads with them which is great!
Please follow the time schedule we provided for you (also found below) when bringing your students to lunch. It is important that they not arrive early. We will do our very best to dismiss them on time, as well. We dismiss 7th grade about a minute to a minute and a half early because they have to walk to the other end of the building and we don't want them arriving to class late.
One of the biggest changes that we have noticed from last year is that the students are walking to the cafeteria quietly and calmly. They can be talkative, but we expect that. Please affirm their behavior and let them know that they are meeting the expectations set for them and doing a great job.
DEAR Time
If you remember from our conversation, you need to be modeling reading or engaging in conversation with students about their reading. This can be a simple "Tell me about your book...Why did you choose this book?..."
Capturing Kids' Hearts - Week 4
Your training guide has a quite a bit of helpful activities and reminders. Be sure to review that form time to time.
Student-Led Conferences Coming Soon
You will need to be sure that your students have access to samples of their work. They should choose some graded assignments to share and you should have some for them to share. I would suggest that they show their composition journals that they are using in class as well as during DEAR time.
