Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens
This week in Idea Lab we read several holiday and seasonal classics, worked on finishing our three in-progress 350 piece puzzles, and created some Lego masterpieces. Students enjoyed hearing read-alouds of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express, Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day, and Jan Brett’s The Hat and The Mitten. Readings varied by grade. Thank you for your continued support of the Idea Lab! I wish you a warm and wonderful holiday season and a safe and relaxing winter break!
Mr. D's SE Skills Guidance Updates
Grade 5: We took some time to review and plan ahead for next semester and the students Anti-Bullying efforts. The fifth grade class will continue activities and work in these areas when we return from break! Following these conversations, the students and I played a fun game!
Grade 4: The students and I returned to our prior lesson of a Recipe for Friendship and the good qualities that help individuals make friends, keep friends, and get along nicely with others. The students finished-up creating their recipe cards and then we shared out loud with each other. Finally, the students and I took some time to play a game!
Grade 3: The students and I returned to our prior lesson of a Recipe for Friendship and the good qualities that help individuals make friends, keep friends, and get along nicely with others. The students finished up creating their recipe cards and then we shared out loud with each other. Finally, the students and I took some time to play a game!
Grade 1: The students and I took time to review the four different skills and rules we have been focusing on as a class the last several lessons: Good Teamwork, Listening Skills, Sharing and Fair Play. Following this review, the students and I played a fun game!
Kindergarten: The students and I continued our lesson from last time focusing on Friends. We reviewed the story “Twiggle Makes Friends”, and the three important things any person can do to make friends, keep friends, and get along with others; play with each other, help one another, and share with others. Finally, the students had an opportunity to play games with each other in the classroom to practice these skills!
Finally, I would like to wish all of our Gates Mills students and families a Wonderful Holiday Season and Happy New Year! I hope everyone has a restful and relaxing winter break, and I look forward to a great 2019!

It's Cold Weather Time Again
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal.
We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into shoud they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for their children.
