SLE WEEKLY UPDATE
October 7 , 2022
Dear East Families,
We hope you are looking forward to a fantastic weekend. This has been a challenging week for us and there is nothing we take more seriously than the safety of our students and our staff. We want to thank all of those who helped support us this week and emphasize to our students the importance of making good choices and refraining from any behavior that might threaten the safety of anyone in our building.
As we move forward in anticipation of the celebratory events that Homecoming week brings, we want to remind students of the expectations we have for their behavior and provide information about the assembly, the tailgate, the game, and the dance next weekend. If you did not have a chance to review the notice we sent out earlier regarding next week's events, please click on the following document: HOMECOMING WEEK INFORMATION.
Additional information regarding the game can be found here: HOMECOMING GAME INFORMATION.
Congratulations to our newest group of NHS Inductees. We welcomed 62 new members this week and we are looking forward to seeing the great things they will be involved in to demonstrate leadership, scholarship, character, and service.
We have a few updates for you to review. Have a fantastic weekend!
Be EAST!

my-SAEBRS Screening Communication
South Lyon Community Schools will be administering the mySAEBRS screener to our secondary students in grades 6-12 twice this school year, once in the fall (October/November) and again in the spring (March). We would like to share some information about the screener before it is administered at our middle and high schools.
The mySAEBRS screener is utilized as a tool to gather data at the district level to help South Lyon Community Schools understand what needs our students have and how we can best support them. The goal of utilizing this screener is to help design programming that best supports our students to be as successful as possible in school. Our current practices will continue for identifying and serving students with behavior, academic and emotional needs, even with this additional data. Students will not be contacted about their individual answers on this screener.
This screener is not required for students at the secondary level, but will be given during Cougar Hour on 10/25. As a parent/guardian, you are welcome to opt your child out of this screener by filling out this form. Additionally, on the day of the screening, students will not be forced to complete the screener and can opt-out themselves.
Information about mySAEBRS:
The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (mySAEBRS) is a 20 item rating scale that students complete about their social, academic, and emotional behaviors. It is grounded in a conceptual model which states that school success is predicated not just upon academic achievement, but also success within multiple inter-related behavioral domains. The mySAEBRS assessment is designed to evaluate student functioning in terms of overall general behavior (Total Behavior; 20 items), as well as Social Behavior (7 items), Academic Behavior (6 items), and Emotional Behavior (7 items). Screening is the process of checking all students' performance (taking their "temperature") up to three times a year using mySAEBRS. Students will complete the mySAEBRS screener twice this school year, once in October and again at the beginning of March. This notice and option to opt out will be offered again in late February for the secondary screening date.
The mySAEBRS screener will be completed by students in grades 6 through 12. It is a 20-item rating scale that includes questions about a student's social, academic and emotional behaviors. The mySAEBRS screener is available in both English and Spanish for students. The student completes the scale online and it takes approximately 10 minutes to complete mySAEBRS. Students can only take this once during a screening period.
Each mySAEBRS item has a score value from 0 through 3. These three scales (social, academic, and emotional) combine to represent a Total Behavior (20 items) scale. The online system (Fastbridge) reports a student's overall performance on each mySAEBRS scale as a sum of item scores within each scale.
Below is a list of the items in each scale. Students will use the following frequency indicators to identify how often they experience the described behaviors.
Never - Sometimes - Often - Almost Always
Social Behavior Indicators:
I argue with others.
I get along with my peers.
I lose my temper.
I disrupt class.
I am respectful.
Other people like me.
I have trouble waiting my turn.
Academic Behavior Indicators:
I like school.
I am ready for class.
I get good grades.
I have trouble working alone.
It’s hard to pay attention in class.
I participate in class.
Emotional Behavior Indicators:
I feel sad.
I feel nervous.
I like to try new things.
I am happy.
I am worried.
When something bad happens, it takes me a while to feel better.
I like being alone.
If you have any further questions about the mySAEBRS screener, please contact your child’s building administrator.
Wrapping Up September in the Media Center!
Students have found a few changes when they enter the Media Center this school year. It is still a great place to find new books, study, work with small groups, and get away from the daily grind, but we also have a new board game table, a popular community puzzle, and a relaxation coloring station. Students have been enjoying these new areas before and after school and during lunchtime.
This month has been busy with all 9th-grade students and several ELA classes of 10th-grade students visiting the media center for a scavenger hunt style orientation, a digital citizenship lesson on creating a healthy media balance, and a fun book tasting to “sample” some of the great fiction books in the media center. The students are excited about checking out books this year and it has resulted in doubling our fiction and non-fiction book checkout record for September from any previous years! 312 checkouts!
We also held our first media center event with a Meet and Greet with Olive, our school therapy dog. Students had a great time playing with Olive and learning all about her daily habits. During a recent Cougar Hour, the media center hosted three college visits from Hope College, the University of Michigan, and Oakland University. Interested juniors and seniors can check the media center event board to sign up for future college visits.
We will continue to update you on how students can continue to enjoy the great things happening in our media center!

Extended Trips or Vacations
As a reminder, we are administering mid-year and end-of-year assessments without adjustments. Please be aware that students need to be present to take mid-year and end-of-year exams at the time they are given as we are not able to give exams early. We understand there may be illnesses or extenuating circumstances, but delaying exams leads to delayed grades and may lead to a delay in establishing eligibility. Please take a moment to review our exam schedule for January and June to avoid uncertainty and delayed grades. Additionally, if you plan to be on an extended trip or vacation, please take a moment to review the following note shared in the SLCS Community Update this week. See below:
We recognize that families may need to travel during times outside of our school district’s scheduled breaks. In the case of any prearranged vacation or travel, make-up work may not be ready prior to a student leaving. Students may need to collect their make-up work upon their return to school.
It is important to note that our district’s practice is to drop students from our enrollment after they have been absent from school for more than two consecutive weeks without medical documentation. If your family is traveling for multiple weeks or months at a time while school is in session, please be aware that your family will need to re-enroll your student when you return to the district. Make-up work will not be provided for the time the student was not enrolled.
At the middle and high school level, grades earned prior to the vacation/leave may or may not be reinstated upon re-enrollment based on the duration and individual circumstances. If you have questions, please contact your building principal
