...and It's Nine Elements

What is Digital Citizenship?
Digital Citizenship is behavior used with technology that is appropriate, responsible, and maintains an individual's integrity.
Digital Citizenship in MY Classroom
I think that teaching Digital Citizenship and setting an example for my students for appropriate use of technology is important. Hopefully this will encourage them to follow this standard and maintain the ideals of Digital Citizenship throughout the rest of their schooling and life!
What Are the 9 Elements?
1. Digital Access
Digital access is associated with equal use of technology in a society. This matters in my classroom because it's important to make sure that all of my students have equal access to technological resources in order complete assignments or further understand content.
2. Digital Commerce
Digital commerce pertains to buying and selling products and services electronically. This doesn't connect directly with certain content I will be teaching in my classroom but I think that it would be important to discuss this with my students and warn them of the risks of giving away credit card information online. Examples of websites that support digital commerce are eBay, Zappos, or Amazon.com.
3. Digital Communication
Digital communication is basically having a conversation, but through technological means. This could be an interesting element to include into my classroom. It could take form as having online pen pals from other parts of the world or requiring students to email, for example, important individuals or organizations questions they might have for a class project.
4. Digital Literacy
Digital literacy is being able to understand technology and how to use it. I think, especially in these modern times, it is very important for me to encourage digital literacy in my classroom because that is what a huge part of our society is based around.
5. Digital Etiquette
For an individual to possess digital etiquette, they must understand that it is the appropriate conduct while using technology. All people should know what is the expected digital etiquette just like they should know what real world etiquette is. I will emphasize this to my future students.
6. Digital Law
Digital law is similar to our regular laws in that it keeps people responsible for their actions and deeds preformed online. I think it will be beneficial to my students to emphasize the importance of digital law and that following these rules will make them better digital citizens.
7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities
Digital rights and responsibilities are important to understand because it is the independence of each technology user. Students need to understand the freedom that comes with using technology and the responsibility they have as a digital citizen to uphold their integrity and morals both online and offline.
8. Digital Health and Wellness
Digital health and wellness pertains to mental and physical well being in the digital world. Maintaining a good one of these is important for making decisions using technology. I think this can be stressed to students in my classroom to increase their awareness of how much of a priority they should make it.
9. Digital Security
Digital security are the precautions a technology user can take to protect themselves. Scams, hackers, and viruses are very real things in today's society and the effects they can have on a piece of technology can be extremely detrimental to the user or owner of the device. I am going to stress to my students the importance of monitoring websites and programs so that they can keep themselves and their technology safe.
