York Avenue Family Newsletter - 3/6/22
Message from Mrs. Richardson
Dear York Avenue Families,
March is designated as National Reading Month and Women's History Month! Read Across America Week was a success. Thanks for helping to instill a love of reading.
If you haven't heard, YA will be taking part in One School, One Book. Our big reveal was last week. We will be reading Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliot. Every student received a copy of the book to take home, along with a pacing calendar and raffle tickets to return on Fridays with their name and teacher written on the back. Please click here for the parent letter and calendar.
H&S May Fair planning meetings are taking place. Please consider completing this Google Form the committee has created to gather volunteer interest. Also, YA Yearbook order form and a Shout-Out form were sent home this week. If you're interested in purchasing a Yearbook, please complete the form and return to your child's teacher.
YA student council representatives have come up with ideas for spirit days at YA. This Tuesday, 3/8, is pajama day! Come to school feeling cozy on our early dismissal day.
March 8 is also International Women's Day. This day is about celebrating a woman's success and raising awareness against bias. I hope you can take time to celebrate with the women you admire.
A few reminders for upcoming events:
- Tuesday, 3/8- One hour early dismissal day (2:40pm) & pajama day
Warmly,
Dipa P. Richardson
Principal

March is Women's History Month!
This month is nationally recognized as a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history, across all disciplines.
Please take time this month to explore this page full of resources put together by NPSD, as we celebrate Women’s History Month together.
One particularly fun resource is an interactive bookshelf with stories featuring prominent women in history; each book links to a read-aloud video. We encourage you to explore these books with your children and invite them to check them out from the school library. Also check out this fun website that mocks up the faces of prominent women onto U.S. currency, a great way to learn a little bit about a lot of great women!
March Counselor's Corner
March has certainly been off to an exciting start! The students at York Avenue did a great job showing respect to one another this week as some students and staff chose not to wear their mask and others continued to do so. I was proud of the students for how they handled this change and was very happy to see some familiar smiles around the building!
The following is an article from NPR about how to talk to your kids if there are scary things on the news. The news is all around us and your child may have caught a glimpse of something scary and confusing. I have found this article helpful in guiding conversations with my own children who have asked some heavy questions lately and hope you may too. What to Say to Kids when the New is Scary
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support.

STEM Activities for Home
A STEM activity is similar to science experiments for kids, but rather than simply involving science, the activity includes other elements that round-out the study and foster a love of exploration and discovery that children can take with them beyond school.
If you give any of these a try, please share pictures with us!
Kindergarten Registration
We are excited to announce that Kindergarten Registration for the 2022-2023 school year will begin on February 1st. All Kindergarten registrations can be completed online through the district website. Please use this link to begin the registration process. On the district website, you will also find additional information about Kindergarten. If you have any questions regarding Kindergarten registration, feel free to contact the main office.
March Lunch Menu
Please be sure to review the options with your child. They will tell their teacher their choice each morning.
Home & School Meeting News
One topic discussed was safety. The safety of the community is the most important goal during drop-off and pick-up. We all have a responsibility to see that every child is safe. In addition, we need to keep traffic moving to facilitate student arrival and dismissal in a timely way. It is imperative that the procedures below are observed.
Another topic of discussion was the need for volunteers. YA Home & School Association has many ideas for spring events. Please consider taking the lead or joining a group to help these ideas come to fruition. We appreciate any availability you may have. To get involved, please send an email to yahomeandschool@gmail.com.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Arrival
All drop offs in the car line are in front of the main entrance between the orange cones. Please pull your car up to the large sign carried by our 6th grade safety.
Do not park your car or exit your car in the car line.
Keeping safety in mind, please do not go around vehicles in front of you and do not attempt to back up your vehicle.
As the space in front of you becomes available, the next set of vehicles will pull forward and drop off their child(ren).
When in the car line, please practice patience. Parents should not exit their vehicle in order to keep the car line moving. Staff members are available to assist the students with their backpacks or any other item they need to get out of the vehicle.
Dismissal
Pull up between the cones for pick up. Do not park and leave your car in the car line.
You can move forward to pull up between the cones as the cars in front of you leave.
If you park across the street or elsewhere, please exit your vehicle and wait for your child on school property.
Please cross the street at a corner to return back to your car. Do not run across the street.
Please be careful when pulling out of your parking spot and watch for other vehicles and our walkers.
