Online Learning Pathway Newsletter

October 22-November 30, 2021

Principal's Message

Dear Online Learning Pathway families,

Happy Fall! We are having such a lovely and extended fall this year for which I'm so grateful. I love winter but I'd love a lot less of it than we normally get!

We've had a wonderful start up at the Online Learning Pathway this year. Students are well into their courses now and they're starting to become more comfortable and at ease with the online platform. Our staff are working hard with students to ensure that every student who comes to the OLP is successful. It's great to see more activity online with the students!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving liturgy with Father Ignacy from St. Albert parish presiding. We will continue to have our OLP join our St. Gabriel Education Centre family for liturgies and celebrations. It's good for the students to be able to see people like our parish priest working with our schools.

I'm looking forward to continuing to get to know our students and families this semester.

Renee Trottier,

principal

Online Learning Pathway Halloween!

We encourage all students to dress up for Halloween on October 29. Please remember that we are a school so costumes should be tasteful. Avoid excessively violent, gory, scary or culturally insensitive costumes or costumes that are overly revealing. Feel free to ask me if you're in doubt. Join Mrs. Trottier during block 7 for some fun Halloween games.

Food Drive

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Food Drive, whether you dropped off food at St. Gabriel Education Centre, at your home base schools or at the food bank in your local community, we are grateful for your time and service to others. A special thank you to GSACRD Trustee Serena Shaw for picking up the food we collected and delivering it to Father Les in Lac St. Anne so that he can distribute it to people of the Paul Band and Alexis Reserve.

"A portion of the harvest is set aside for the poor and the stranger" - Leviticus 19:9

GSACRD and Evergreen PD/Staff Meeting Days

We've had some requests from Evergreen students to join our GSACRD students when Evergreen has PD/Staff meeting days. By and large, the students do not like asynchronous days and would prefer to be in class. We do not have a problem with the students joining us on their PD Days. When it's a GSACRD PD day, all of the students would just have the day off together. The only Evergreen students who would get asynchronous lessons would be the ones who weren't able to join us in class. We just ask that the students let us know well in advance whether they will be joining us online or whether they need lessons prepared for them. It's very important that you let us know because the teachers have been preparing individual lessons for the students on these days. Obviously, this is a lot of work. Please let us know if you have any questions about this.

ARISE! Get Up, Get Going and Go with God!

"Arise! I have appointed you as a witness

of what you have seen!"(Acts 26:16)

Our GSACRD Faith theme is in its second year of, "Arise! Get Up, Get Going and Go with God!"

This year, we are focusing on the "Get Going!" part of our theme. How do students, staff and parents know, model and witness Jesus Christ?

October - The Month of the Rosary

WHY IS OCTOBER THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY?

October 7th is the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, sometimes referred to as the Feast of the Holy Rosary. The day was dedicated by St. Pius V who credited a victory over the invading Turks to the intercession of Mary through the rosary. Pope Benedict XVI described the image of Our Lady of the Rosary in a 2007 Angelus:

“The traditional image of Our Lady of the Rosary portrays Mary who with one arm supports the Child Jesus and with the other is offering the rosary beads to St Dominic. This important iconography shows that the Rosary is a means given by the Virgin to contemplate Jesus and, in meditating on his life, to love him and follow him ever more faithfully. It is this message that Our Lady has also bequeathed to us in her various apparitions.”

Mental Health and Wellness

Don't forget to check out our "Mental Health and Wellness" section on our website for wellness ideas, tips, resources and sessions that are being offered. Click on "community supports" for information about services in St. Albert and area to support you or your family.

Oct. 26, GSACRD Voice will be hosting another Parent Cafe (online parenting session). This one is for any parents with students in preschool to grade 12 and will focus on "Recognizing Hard to Have Feelings with your Child". Please preregister by clicking HERE.

Counselling Services

OLP students have access to counselling services through their primary registered school. School counsellors are able to provide social and emotional support to students both online or at school. Counselling referrals can be made by parents or teachers. Support is provided for individual or family concerns and referrals to outside agencies can be accessed through school counsellors.

Attendance

If your child is going to be absent from school:

Please note - your child will be entered with an unexcused absence if we have not been informed that they will be absent.

Digital Citizenship

Although students may be learning at home, this is a gentle reminder that everyone must treat our digital spaces (Google Classroom/Google Meets) as a physical classroom. The same expectations of students are required: students must be respectful, attentive and engaged.

Did you change your contact information?

Remember to call your child's base school AND our Online Learning Pathway teachers if you changed your email address, phone number or physical address. If you're not getting communication from us, it's because we don't have your correct contact info.
