6th Grade Band Notes
August 15, 2017
Welcome Back!
That sure was a fast two months. It was so great to see so many parents at 6th grade orientation the other night. It was great to see that so many students practiced and took lessons over the summer! Hopefully this e-mail will answer most of the questions that I have heard about 6th grade band this year.
How it all works
The 6th Grade Concert Band will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during 8th period. Students will also receive one small-group lesson per week just like they did at Schiesher. These small-group lessons will rotate to different periods from week to week and they will begin the third week of school. The lesson schedule will be posted on the bulletin board in the music room and it will also be posted on our web site like last year. There will be no after-school practices this year.
We will have plenty of time to ease back into the school-year. Do not worry if your child hasn't practiced much over the summer! We will be doing plenty of reviewing the first few weeks before we move on to new music.
Performances
We will have five performances this year. Please mark your calendars. These are the only after-school commitments the students will have since there is no after-school band rehearsals this year.
*We will be performing as special guests at the high school fall band concert. This is brand new this year and we are excited to see how it goes.
Tuesday, December 12- Junior High Winter Band and Chorus Concert @ 7:00 PM
Saturday, February 24- Solo and Ensemble Contest, time TBA
* All junior high band students will prepare and perform a solo. The location of this festival is still TBA and more information will be sent out later this fall.
Tuesday, March 20- District Band Festival @ 7:00 (at the high school)
Thursday, May 17- Spring Band Concert @ 7:00
First two classes
Wednesday, 8/16: First Day of Band. Students will NOT need to bring their instruments this day- we will need the entire class time to cover procedures and routines.
Friday, 8/18: We will play our instruments in class. All students should bring their instruments to school! Upon dismissal from the gymnasium in the morning, students will proceed directly to the band room and place their instruments in their assigned band locker (see below for more information). Students will then go to their regular school lockers and get ready to go to their first class. Mrs. Kiener and I will be there to help out.
