JCSF Awards Emma Winterboer with Schlenker Scholarship

On Friday, May 14, JHS senior Emma Winterboer opened her front door to quite the surprise: She was awarded the Johnston Community School Foundation Raymond and Marie Schlenker Scholarship.

The Schlenker Scholarship provides a $10,000 scholarship, payable at a rate of $2,500 per year for four years. Eligible students include Johnston High School seniors with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and accepted full-time enrollment in an Iowa four-year college or university, and who maintain a GPA of 2.5 each term for the four years. Save the Date: Dragon Scholarship Fund Annual Auction

Registration is now OPEN for the annual Dragon Scholarship Fund Auction on Friday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m.! The event will be held in person at Hyperion Field Club, Johnston. Don’t wait, register now at: https://jcsfoundation/ejoinme.org/registration.

JCSD Students Showcase Art Online

The JCSD art teachers have combined forces to create a virtual art show in lieu of an in-person show this year. This short video features the skills and abilities of many of our students district wide, from all schools. We have an abundance of talented student artists in our district!

Aquatics Classes, Jobs Now Available

Make a splash at the Summit MS pool this spring and summer with upcoming classes and job opportunities!

  • Jr. Lifeguard classes: Class participants will shadow lifeguards at the Summit pool and get CPR certified. This course will take place over the summer for $55. Call 515-278-0552 if interested in enrolling.
  • Now Hiring: Aquatics Lifeguards and Swim Instructors. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older. Please contact Breonnhia Bailey, JCE Aquatics Coordinator, to learn more. 515-986-0951 or breonnhia.bailey@johnston.k12.ia.us.

Superintendent Laura Kacer provided a brief update on current COVID numbers and staff absences.

The board then discussed the recent information and guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health to make masks optional in schools. At the May 17 meeting, the board recommended our current mitigation strategies - including masks for all students and staff - remain in place through the end of the school year. This was then reversed when a new law went into effect on May 20 that made masks optional in schools.


There will be limited seating in the District Office board room, in a distanced and safe seating style. Seat availability is first come, first seated. All public comments must be read in person and will no longer be accepted electronically. The board meetings are livestreamed and available on demand at https://team1sports.com/johnston/. June board meetings are June 7 and 21, 2021.
