RICHLAND REFLECTIONS

Week of 9/6/22 at Richland Elementary School

NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

Big picture
Dear Richland Families,

What a wonderful start to the 2022-2023 school year! Every Sunday afternoon you will receive an edition of the Richland Reflections with highlights from our week and everything you need to know about the days and weeks ahead. The Richland community is like no other, and we value our partnership with our families.

In this first newsletter of the school year, you'll meet new staff members, read about the Leader in Me and how we recognize students demonstrating the 7 habits, learn how to add money to your child's lunch account, and find out how to get involved in our amazing PTO. You will also see highlights of Richie, the Richland Panther's visit!

This is my seventh year as the proud principal of Richland, and this year's word, intentional, represents everything we do, from intentional classroom and school family communication to intentional strategies for teaching reading. We believe in educating the whole child - academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. We invite you to see a window into your child's days when you visit Richland for Back to School Night on September 19. Keep reading for more information.

This school year is going to be the best year yet! As always, we thank you for your support.

With gratitude,

Nicole Zuerblis

Richland Principal

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

What is ELD?

The English Language Development (ELD) program in QCSD aims to grow the language skills of all English Learners (ELs). ELD instruction focuses on vocabulary development and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. At Richland, all teachers collaborate around each EL's unique needs. We support them in various ways, including ELD small groups, in-class support, and content-area instruction and support. To learn more, please visit the QCSD ELD Family Handbook.

Celebrating our families' diverse backgrounds is also important to us at Richland. To start the school year, let Mrs. Coyle know if you would like to help our school celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month September 15-October 15. Please email her at ecoyle@qcsd.org.

PURCHASING BREAKFAST OR LUNCH AT SCHOOL

Big picture

QCSD wants to remind families that the federal program to waive the cost of meals for all students has expired. Families can make online payments for student meals at SchoolCafe. Lunch accounts for students at the Upper Bucks County Technical School are separate and may be paid at My Payments Plus.

In addition, we’re asking that QCSD families fill out 2022-2023 Free & Reduced Meal Applications. Households must submit a new application each school year unless they receive a Direct Certification letter, which was mailed by the district in mid-August.

A situation has arisen for families with students on Free and Reduced Meals where your child may be charged for not taking enough items to qualify as a reimbursable meal. This is a federal regulation. Here’s information on what a meal consists of. Please speak with your student(s) to avoid this issue.

Click here to access all information about Free & Reduced meals in QCSD.

If you have questions, please email sreiss@qcsd.org or call 215-529-2012.

Here is a video on 2022-2023 school meal changes.

AWESOME FIRST WEEK!

A VISIT FROM RICHIE, THE RICHLAND PANTHER!

WHAT IS LEADER IN ME?

Leader in Me is a philosophy used at our school to promote leadership qualities in our students! Students learn about and practice our 7 habits daily. Those habits are as follows:

  1. Be proactive

  2. Begin with the end in mind

  3. Put first things first

  4. Think win-win

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  6. Synergize

  7. Sharpen the Saw

What will my child gain from Leader in Me?

Each day at Richland, students are encouraged to show the 7 habits. Students receive lessons focused on showing these habits in all areas of our school. Lessons include teaching students what these ideas look like in each area and practicing what those behaviors look like. Students will continue to receive these types of lessons throughout the year.

What is the Leaderboard?

Each day, adults in the school building have tickets to give to any student they see exhibiting one of the 7 habits. Once a student receives a Leader Ticket, he or she will go to the office to sign our school Leader Book, pick a number at random for the placement of their ticket on the Leaderboard, and will bring home a postcard to show you so that you may share in their good news! Once the student has a ticket on the board, he or she is eligible to receive the "mystery motivator". When ten tickets in a row are up on the board, those students will spin a wheel to receive a mystery motivator prize. Examples of motivators are extra recess, lunch with Mrs. Zuerblis, and many more.

How can I help from home?

We encourage you to discuss the program with your child at home. The characteristics of the 7 habits encourage responsibility and ownership of one's actions, as well as other leadership qualities. Ask your child to use the ideas shared at school when at home and in the neighborhood, and routinely check in with your child on how he or she is demonstrating these characteristics at school.
