A "READING STRATEGY" BY JENNIFER SERRAVALLO
What is the Strategy?
Read the text and look at the picture. As yourself, "If I had to write one sentence explaining this picture, what would I say?" Use the information you read to help you.
Who is this strategy for?

Sometimes paragraphs and illustrations in informational texts don't have captions. This is usually because the main text gives you enough information to be able to understand it with giving a caption. To check your own understanding, you can try to write your own caption. For example...(model an example with an appropriate text with students)
Prompts to give students:
- Think about the main text when you're trying to write the caption.
- Use your own words
- That is good information, now try to say it in a shorter way. Try to make a one-sentence caption.
- What information from the text could help you?
- Retell what you read. Now say what fact(s) relate to the picture.
