A Message from Administration
Greetings DLES Community,
As we have shared previously, one of our focuses this year is our students attendance. You may not know, but last year our average daily attendance was 93% of our students attending. Although our percentage thus far is better than that, we are currently at 96%, we still have room for improvement. Additionally, we have a high number of students that are arriving late. We have had several days where there have been up to 40 students that have arrived after the late bell. That number is equivalent to two full kindergarten classrooms. Student attendance is one of the most common predictors of academic achievement.
Students who consistently miss school hours develop habits that will lead into their adult life, affecting their education, career, and social connections. In contrast, students who participate fully in school activities will have more opportunities to achieve academically, make healthy and informed lifestyle choices, and develop responsible citizenship traits.
Students who arrive late and leave early from school miss out on key learning opportunities such as community circle, morning announcements, academic activities, direct instruction, and social interactions with peers.
Absence and tardiness in the classroom are some of the most challenging and powerful factors to student success, but through careful self-examination and a little grit, together as a community dedicated to the finest education of our students, we can improve on attendance and readiness in the classroom.
For the month of November, we will be running a contest to see which RECC classroom and which grade K-5 has the best attendance and lowest tardy numbers. We would love to have be able provide every student with the reward because we are able to have perfect attendance (excused absences will be accepted) and zero tardies.
Proudly Serving You,
Mrs. Caroland, Mrs. Van Osdel, and Mrs. Yerashunas
