Join Us for Our Claxton Outdoor Workday!

Join us at Claxton for our back-to-school outdoor workday this coming Saturday, August 17! All are welcome! Come out for any or all of the time between 9-1. We'll spend time working and weeding in our garden beds and taking care of a few other tasks around our beautiful campus. We have plenty of garden tools, but if you have any favorites, feel free to bring them. No experience or green thumb is necessary. Just come out and have fun! Please email our Claxton PTO Grounds Chair, Tricia Johnson, at tiller91@bellsouth.net if you have any questions.

Volunteering at Claxton

We welcome and appreciate our volunteers! If you wish to volunteer at any time, there are a couple of requirements that need to be completed in advance.

1) Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a supervising chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for checks to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to get yours started. https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

2) Also, all volunteers need to attend a brief Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so you can go ahead and check the calendar. Please see below for the next training sessions or check this year's full calendar HERE. Trainings take place in the Boardroom at Asheville City Schools' Central Office at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

Support Project Lit at Claxton

One of Claxton's amazing teachers, Mrs. Hillier, is bringing Project Lit to Claxton this year! Project Lit is about empowering students as leaders and readers. Support is needed to provide student access to copies of the first four novels that the group will study. Please click here to donate or to learn more about Project Lit!

After School Arts (ASA) Classes at Claxton This Fall!

We're gearing up for our fall season of After School Arts (ASA)! As in the past, classes will run from immediately after school until the pick-up time of 4:00pm. Join us for adventures in Yoga Games, Poetry in Action, Tae Kwon Do, LEGO Explorations, FEAST, Wood Carving, Math Attack, LEGO Mindstorm Robotics, Birds, and Spanish! Watch for registration info in next week's Buzz and in student folders!

Message from ACS Bus Transportation

Hello Asheville City School Families,

To prepare for our students return on Monday, August 19th, our Transportation Department is diligently working on school bus assignments.

If your student rode a bus last year and has not changed schools or home addresses, no action is needed. They will ride the same bus as last year.

If you are new to the district, your bus assignment was completed based on your enrollment information. No additional action is needed.

Please note, if you changed addresses, regardless of what grade your student is entered, please contact your school before completing a new bus request form.

Rising 6th and 9th Graders do not need to contact their school before completing a new bus request form. However, please know that a new bus request form must be completed before August 12th to be eligible to ride a bus on the first day of school.

You can access the online bus request form on the district’s Transportation webpage. If you’d prefer to fill out a paper copy, please stop by your child’s school.

Elementary and middle school bus assignments will be assigned during back to school Open Houses and Meet the Teacher events. High school bus assignments will be available by contacting Asheville High School or SILSA beginning Thursday, August 15th.

If you have any additional questions about the process or student bus assignments, please contact your child’s school.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Dr. Mark Dickerson, Assistant Superintendent of Administration

Box Tops:

Box Tops are worth 10¢ each for our school. This is THE way that Claxton purchases new types of PE equipment and replenish what is worn out.

Look for the Box Tops 4 Education logo on hundreds of everyday grocery and household products. Clip and save the box tops and place them in container in hallway by office. Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipts. www.btfe.com
