NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The National Archives interactive distance learning programs feature primary sources from the Archives’ holdings, including: historical documents, photographs, maps, posters, and more!
We offer FREE distance learning opportunities for students and educators. Our programs are available Tuesday–Thursday and must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. We can deliver up to four programs per school per day. For schools with over four classes, we recommend connecting with two to three classes at a time.
Programs align with State and National social studies standards. Teacher guides include pre- and post-program lessons.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION
Connecting the Cold War and the Kennedy Assassination

What does the Cold War have to do with the Kennedy Assassination? Maybe everything! The Sixth Floor Museum’s staff will explore with participants what Americans were afraid of during the Cold War - The Soviet Union, Cuba and Castro, as well as how people responded to those fears across the USA, in the Soviet Union and right here in DFW. Through primary sources, including oral histories, learn about how the story of Lee Harvey Oswald is connected to the story of the Cold War and to the Assassination of President Kennedy, and discuss the ultimate outcomes of the Cold War.

General John B. Sylvester is retired from the United States Army. He is a graduate of Texas A&M and the United States Army War College. He served in the first Gulf War and is remembered for his command of the famous Tiger Brigade of the 2nd Armored Division. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, The Defense Superior Service Medal, two Bronze Stars and one Silver Star.

Young Spurs Essay Contest by Cornelius Foote Jr.

Professor Foote teaches a wide variety of classes at the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas. Outside of his teaching duties, Foote is Co-Director of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, a 14-year-old event featuring prominent journailsts, authors and editors discussing all aspects of journalism and media.
Last year, nine students from several Bryan/College Station High Schools were recognized at the conference for winning awards in the Young Spurs Essay Contest. Foote has a B.A. in government from Wesleyan University and an M.S.J. from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University.

In Greece, the arrival of Spring is celebrated in Martios (March). This change in season is noted by the arrival/return of the Swallows. This reliable environmental signifier has been a part of Greek culture for thousands of years. Music, folk-tales, poetry, and art have been created to reflect the importance of the Swallow (Helidonia) to the Greek people.
This March, join the OJAC for a Spring Helidonismata celebration! Students will investigate the environmental and cultural significance of the swallow in Greek culture as they:
- Review the swallows seasonal migration and nesting patterns
- Explore the swallow as a symbol for new beginnings/renewal and hope
- Listen to a carol performed by Greek students
- Investigate a work of art from the museum collection
Grades 1-3 - Following the presentation, students will create a spinning swallow puppet inspired by traditional Greek imagery.
Grades 4-6 - Following the presentation, students will create their own Martis bracelet to wear then gift to the birds in celebration of Spring!
