his plan was to use the rifles and pikes he captured at the arsenal, and what he brought along, to arm slaves with the aim of striking terror to the slaveholders in Virginia.

-left 3 men behind as a rear-guard, one being his son.
- they captured Colonel Lewis Washington, some of his slaves, 2 relics, several watchmen and townspeople.
-Brown's men captured the armory but were caught.
-this lead to the war by frightening slave owners.
