March, 2015
March Madness
March was a very busy month here at Roby Elementary. Basketball games, Read Across America, spring musicals, set design, book fair...the list goes on. Hope you were able to come by and join in the fun!
Roby students are ready for spring! We took advantage of the handful of warm days in March and went outside to draw. We are also learning how to draw plants from real life. We are looking at the work of Georgia O’Keefe and drawing inspiration from her large scale flower paintings.
Art club wrapped up and got to show off all of their hard work at the Roby Spring Flings “Joust” and “Arf.” The set and costumes looked great! Here are some other things that have been going on in art class:
Kindergarten: Studied the artwork of Paul Klee and made their own version of the painting Cat and Bird
1st Grade: Made animal chalk drawings outside
2nd Grade: Created animal sculptures with air dry clay
3rd Grade: Created animal sculptures with clay
4th Grade: Finished glazing their ceramic pots
5th Grade: Finished glazing their ceramic pots
I also want to say thank you to parents and staff who have supported Roby’s digital art gallery at www.artsonia.com! So far, we have uploaded over 2000 works of art and raised over $100! Way to go!
In Topsy Turvy this month, we talked about Friendship. The lesson focused on what personal characteristics are important to have in a true friend and how to be a true friend to others. What traits do you treasure in your friends?
March Library Programming - Read Across America and Book Fair!
March 2 was Dr. Seuss' birthday and we celebrated by spending part of our week thinking and sharing about "all the places we'll go". Students were asked to share their career goals as well as having fun with crazy hair, silly socks and dressing like their chosen career.
Book Fair arrived at Roby on March 23 and wrapped up on 27th. Book fairs allow students an easy opportunity to make a purchase of a book to take home as their own. Research shows that a personal home library enhances the educational achievement of students:
Books "...enhance the academic performance of children from families at all educational and occupation levels”.

Scheduled Classes
Kindergarten classes enjoyed Dr. Seuss books. We also learned about the word "culture" and explored a cultural event in the State of Alaska called the Iditarod. We read about the famous dog, Balto, who helped to save sick children in the town of Nome, Alaska in 1925. March is "Music in Our Schools Month", so we enjoyed some violin and jazz music in library and read texts that showed the power of music in our lives.
Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are seen on a weekly basis for book exchange.
Congratulations to the students who participated and performed in the spring musicals! I am so proud of everyone’s hard work in making these performances a success.
The second and third grade students presented “Arf!” They did a great job showing their canine courage. The fourth and fifth grade students presented “Joust!” They did an outstanding job and I’m very proud of them.
Kindergarten and first grade are continuing to work on simple songs, matching the pitches Sol-Mi, reading rhythms with quarter notes and eighth notes, and using these elements to create their own songs.
The Performing Arts Club: Choir and Orff had the opportunity to perform in the Central Area Music Festival. This festival showcased the elementary, middle and high school music programs. The elementary students prepared three pieces and performed these songs in conjunction with Shepherdsville Elementary and Cedar Grove Elementary. All students did a wonderful job at displaying their musical talent.
During the Month of March students worked on basketball and volleyball skills. We also played several cooperative games and focused on sportsmanship. Students in grades 3-5 have been running for 4 minutes, and students in 1st and 2nd have been running for 3 min. We are trying to build up our cardiovascular endurance! Fitness testing will begin after spring break! Students will be comparing their beginning of the year pretests to their end of year post -tests. We are still waiting on prizes from the American Heart Association for Jump Rope for Heart. It looks like we donated close to $2,500! I am so proud of our Roby students and families for helping such a great cause!
Please remember to check the lost and found! Several students have left/lost things in PE class!
It is very important that all students wear tennis shoes to school every day! If your child in unable to participate in P.E. for a particular reason, please be sure to send a note with them! P.E. grades are based on participation and behavior in class. There will also be written assignments that the students will be graded on throughout the year. Students are not graded on their “athletic ability” but they are graded on their willingness to try all activities!
