What are grains?

Any food containing wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal or barley is a grain product such as pasta, bread or chex mix. Grains have two subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the whole grain kernel. Refined grains have had the germ and bran removed from the kernel. Most refined grains are enriched which means certain B vitamins have been added back after processing.


Servings of a food with grains is measured in an ounce. For example, one serving would be one slice of bread or 5 crackers or one small bagel.

Nutrients

What good comes out of grains?

Grains are an important source of nutrients and B vitamins. Dietary Fiber from whole grains will help reduce blood cholesterol levels, heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
