Dear Parents and Staff
In his address to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa on 23 November 2004, Anglican Archbishop said:
“Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.”
I’m hoping this is the stance that our Year Four, Five and Six children in our school’s Debate Club will be adopting as they share their debates this afternoon on the following topics:
The Debates commence at 5.30pm with each Year group debate running for approximately 25 minutes. I look forward to hearing the culmination of the great work that these children have been doing of the past number of weeks under the guidance of Mrs Jennings, Ms Carlton and Mrs Hennessy. I’m sure we will all be impressed with what they have learnt and how they conduct themselves in the heat of battle.
CONFIRMATION
Congratulations to our newly Confirmed Year Six students who were beautifully presented to receive this Sacrament last Saturday evening. Thank you to Fr Quynh for conferring the Sacrament on the students, to their parents and Sponsors for presenting them and supporting them throughout their preparation and to the Teachers who prepared them so well to receive this very special Sacrament.
MERCY DAY
It was very obvious that everyone thoroughly enjoyed our Mercy Day celebrations last Friday. Our day commenced with our whole school Mass celebrated in the Church. Our 4 YO Kindy children joined us for the first time in living memory and their immaculate behaviour had an influence on all of us as everyone was most reverent and respectful. In his homily Fr Quynh reminded us of our dual Charisms of the Mercy and Presentation Sisters and the need for us to remember the great works of the Sisters who established our school.
The Mass was followed by some time in class learning more about the Venerable Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. The mini fete between recess and lunch was a huge hit with everyone joining in the wide range of activities prepared by each of the classes and in the afternoon, the tabloid sports with buddy classes finished off a perfect day.
Thank you to all of the staff who worked so hard to ensure such a wonderful day and to the many parents who assisted throughout the day. Due to the $5.00 donation from the children and staff $2162.80 was raised. This will be presented to a representative from the Sisters of Mercy early in Term 4 to assist the Sisters with their missionary work.
ATHLETICS
· Junior Carnival – At the time of writing the Newsletter the Carnival for the children in PP – Year Two was just about to begin. Hopefully the weather will hold out so that the children have the opportunity to enjoy all of their events. I think it may take much more than a little rain to dampen the excitement that was evident as the Carnival commenced.
· Field Events – Throughout the week the children in Years 3-6 have competed in their Field Events. The children certainly enjoyed these and there were a number of excellent results. Congratulations to all of the children who did their best to support their Faction.
· 400 metres –These races will be held for the children in Years 4-6 at Miles Park tomorrow morning.
· Senior Athletics Carnival – This final component of our Faction Athletics Carnivals will be held for children in Years 3-6 on Thursday 11 October (Week 1, Term 4) at Gerry Archer Athletics Centre on Abernethy Rd.
Special thanks to Mr Brett Webb who always ensures that all aspects of our Carnivals run smoothly and as many children as possible have the opportunity to participate.
CARNEVALE
In a very busy day I’m also looking forward to seeing our school choir perform in the Catholic Schools Carnevale in the Perth Cultural Centre today. Due to many factors we can’t be certain of the exact time of their performance but expect it to be between 11.15am and 12.30pm. I hope to see many parents there to support the children.
AUSTRALIAN FLAG
To commemorate Australian National Flag Day which was on 3 September a service will be held next Monday morning as part of our regular weekly assembly. At this service the State Member for Belmont Ms Cassie Rowe MLA will address the assembly and present our school with a new Australian flag.
AWESOME AUSSIES
Unfortunately, I may not be able to attend this special afternoon next Wednesday presented by our Year 4 children as I will be attending the Australian Primary Principals’ Conference along with the other members of our school Leadership Team from Wednesday to Friday. I know that the children have been working hard on their speeches and I’m sure they will be very confident in their presentations.

YEAR 4 CLASS NEWS
Last Tuesday the whole school took part in the ‘Great Veggie Crunch’. Members of Yr 4 became the “Crunch Crew”. They assisted Mr Webb during the national event encouraging students to follow a healthier lifestyle choice when eating school snacks.
In history we are investigating convicts and the arrival of the First Fleet. We have integrated this with art and have sketched and painted pictures of the Endeavour, or a ship similar to those that the convicts may have travelled on. In literacy we have been reading a book titled ‘Letters of a Convict Girl’ by Kate Walker. We are learning about Rosie who was jailed for stealing a lace - edged handkerchief. She was 11 years old at the time of her arrest and the letters are from her convict years and her arrival in Parramatta.
Keep an eye out for the newly improved and colourful ‘Buddy Benches,’ that the Yr 4 have been lovingly restoring. Hopefully they will provide a positive way to assist children within the school to find a friend to play with during recess and lunch.
CHOIR NEWS
Well done to the choir children who performed extremely well at the Catholic Education Carnevale today. The children sang enthusiastically and clearly. It was another performance opportunity for the choir members to showcase the fruits of their labour.
Thank you to the parents who came and viewed the performance. Thank you also to Mrs Doncon, Mrs Bradshaw, Mrs Notte and Mrs Evans (Accompanist) for their invaluable assistance today. I am very grateful to you all.

SPORTS NEWS
Junior Carnival - Tabloid Sports
Thank you to all the parents who came down to support their kids and assist with various jobs today. All the kids did very well in trying conditions and we were able to complete all our running races and relays. We all hope they enjoyed themselves and had a great time. We will be running the tabloid sports next week in the afternoon to make it easier for parents to come down and watch, if they would like. We will then do the presentations for the junior carnival in the Multi Purpose Hall. An email will be sent out with information regarding the date and times for the Tabloid Sports next week. Below is the current positions from today’s carnival. It is still very close and I look forward to seeing how it all pans out next week. A special thanks to parents who assisted with tents/set up in the morning and after the carnival, as well as the Faction Captains who were tremendous!
