SCIS PRINCIPAL MESSAGE 8/24/23

August 24, 2023
A NOTE FROM MRS. RAWLINS
Dear Sloan Creek Families,
It was another spectacular week of learning and fun here at "The Creek"! The students in the photo took it upon themselves to create a "Welcome" line as students arrived at school. I love our students' drive and enthusiasm!
I would like to express my deepest gratitude for a special group of volunteers, the SCIS PTO, for all you do for our school community. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Volunteer Coffee on Monday and for the time and love you give so abundantly. If you have not yet joined our PTO, please do so HERE!
This newsletter is full of important updates and information, including that the deadline to register your 5th grade student for CAMP is tomorrow, August 25! Please read below for more information and the link to register.
Finally, please join me and Assistant Principal, Jessica Blackburn, for our very first Coffee with the Principals tomorrow morning at 8:30AM in the SCIS cafeteria. We hope to see you there!
Lovejoy PROUD,
❤️ 🐆 Megan
PLEASE JOIN US!
SPOTLIGHT: UNSTRUCTURED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Students are LOVING the increase in unstructured physical activity time this year!
Reminder: In an effort to provide a safe environment and an adequate amount of time for unstructured physical activity, the lunch/courtyard time was reconsidered for this school year. Unstructured physical activity/social time is now provided during the PE period and has increased by approximately 20 minutes. This time may be provided outdoors as the weather improves.
🏀🏐 FUN!
SPOTLIGHT: ART STUDIO COLLABORATIVE MURAL
Mrs. Lester's Art students have been working hard to bring a collaborative color block mural to life. Even some of the SCIS staff added their creativity to this piece. We can't wait to share the final product!
5TH GRADE CAMP
TOMORROW, 8/25, IS THE FINAL DAY TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR CAMP!
5th Grade Students will travel to Sky Ranch in Van, TX.
October 4-6, 2023
ALL CHAPERONE SPOTS ARE FILLED
These spots filled quickly! No additional chaperones will be added.
(Sky Ranch recommends 1 chaperone for every 8 students. We currently have 1 chaperone for every 3 students.).
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL UPDATES
🚗🚙🚗🚙 PLEASE DO NOT MERGE EARLY 🚗🚙🚗🚙
Please wait until the "merge point" to create one line. Remaining in two lines for as long as possible reduces the backup onto Country Club Rd. Thank you!
IS YOUR STUDENT GOING HOME A DIFFERENT WAY?
We do not use School Dismissal Manager at Sloan Creek. Please let your child know before school, or call the office before 2:00PM and we will get them the message.
THANK YOU for your continued excellence in the carline!
A few reminders:
- 5th and 6th Grade students may be dropped off by car in the front or back of the school beginning at 7:10AM.
- Please PULL FORWARD along the sidewalk as far as you can - this helps maximize the number of students getting in and out of cars, and makes the system faster!
- If your student is not in your vehicle by the time the line starts moving, you will be asked to pull around into the parking lot.
- Please DO NOT park and walk up to help keep our traffic flow moving.
RAINY DAY DISMISSAL
- You received a bright colored cardstock with your student's name and homeroom teacher. This will need to be displayed in your car window on rainy days so we can dismiss safely from indoors.
GIFTED & TALENTED REFERRALS
Fall Referrals for Grades 5-12
Parents must complete the referral form in PowerSchool.
Referrals due by 5:00 pm August 31, 2023
Testing: Saturdays, September 16 and 23, 2023
Additional information may be found on the G/T portion of the LISD website.
PARENT/STUDENT COMMUNICATION
If a parent needs to communicate with students during the school day THIS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE FRONT OFFICE. Please do not text or call your child, as they will not have access to their cell phones.
Teachers will not allow students to call parents from classroom phones or cell phones for any reason. For anything urgent, students will be sent to the office with a pass to call parents.
-Forgot water bottle? We can supply a water bottle or cup.
-Forgot lunch? Student may buy a cafeteria lunch.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
HELPFUL TIPS:
- When communicating an absence please include the first and last name of your student in the email as well as the reason for the absence.
- Automated emails/phone calls are placed at the end of the day to notify parents of any absences that have not been communicated.
- Allow time for your student's attendance to be updated. I will always respond to your email indicating attendance has been updated. Thank you for your patience.
- Who to email - all attendance matters need to go to Julie Boardman, julie_boardman@lovejoyisd.net or scis_attendance@lovejoyisd.net (they both go to Julie)
VISITORS
We LOVE visitors and look forward to welcoming you on campus!
Lunch is a special time for our students to build friendships and practice social skills independently. It is important for students to adapt to new routines and learn campus and cafeteria structures, so we will not be accepting lunch visitors until Tuesday, September 5.

LIBRARY ❤️ LOVE
Hello Sloan Creek,
My goal is for your library to be a safe place for collaboration, exploration, and recreation. Engaging with stories and collaborative activities encourages students to further develop their empathy and become successful representatives of the SCIS and Lovejoy ISD community. I can’t wait to build relationships with the students at Sloan Creek and help each to find their own reading niche!
Happy Reading,
Rachel Brenner
