Amy, Kaia, and I hope that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy winter break! Whether that meant time with family, food, or finding great places to travel. It is time to ease back into the school routines. Together we can survive this first week:

1. The count down to next school closing, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, starts now.

2. It’s like a mini first day of school all over again.

3. Don't fight it, start the morning letting each child share a brief memory from winter break.

4. January gives you a great chance to reboot behavior plans or try something new.

5. A gift for you is a short faculty meeting, only item on the agenda is our AED re-training! So, race home and get into your pajamas, right after!

Are You Using Para-Professionals In The Best Possible Manner?

Para-professionals are NOT glorified aides. Para-professionals should not be made to wait around to be needed. They should never be sitting-waiting; using their expertise to copy or file is not an appropriate use of their position. The only way to ensure growth in our special education students and therefore all students is to be open to suggestions made by our para-professionals they have experience and training which is invaluable to the classroom teacher. Provide them with access to BCPSOne for curriculum and communicate with them about upcoming instruction. This conversation allows them to pull together manipulatives and resources within the building to help develop quality first instruction. Para-professional should be working with small groups in conjunction with the classroom teacher on a daily basis. They can work on remedial skills, on-grade level skills, or IEP goals as directed by the classroom teacher in cooperation with the special educators. Small group remedial/scaffolded instruction is only effective if the instruction is different, let them help make teaching easier, especially differentiation, by listening to and using their ideas and resources.

2c - Managing Classroom Procedures: Management of Transitions

Students:

  • brainstorm a list of transitions that occur throughout the day and discuss what procedures would work best for each transition and decide how to apply them to each situation.
  • model transition procedures and correct each other when procedures are not followed.
  • monitor group members regarding the time it takes to get into groups.
  • decide which attention signal will work best for their group and remind each other about using it.
  • indicate that they need a practice session to reinforce the procedures for transitions.
