Hello from Hoover!
November 5, 2021
Hello Hoover Families!
The next few weeks will be very busy at Hoover!
We will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Hoover for children ages 5-11 on Thursday, November 11, 2021, 2:15-6:00 pm. Please see the COVID-19 Vaccine section below for more information.
If you have not yet signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences, please see the section below and use the links to reserve a conference time. If you have questions or need help with the scheduling program, please call the school office (319) 688-1110.
The temperatures are becoming chilly on a regular basis now and we are seeing more and more in the office for coats and gloves. We had a small supply of coats, gloves, and hats at school for students to borrow. However those supplies have not being returned to us so we unable to keep up with the need. We need your help: if your child has a coat or jacket, gloves or mittens, and a warm hat, PLEASE have them bring those items to school every day. If your child does not have their own coat, gloves, and hat, please contact our Student Family Advocate, Karli Moellers, and she will help your family find what you need.
In more exciting news, I'm happy to announce that the Principal's Surprise will be a SILLY STRING DUEL between myself and Mr. Simpson! More details will be released soon.
Thank you for all you do to support your children and our school!
Love and light to all,
Mrs. Ceynar

Therapy Dog at Hoover
Dear Parents:
We are writing to inform you that a therapy animal has been approved under ICCSD policies to be present in your child’s school. Redd is a Fox Red Labrador Retriever that has been individually trained to provide animal therapy. Under federal and state law, ICCSD is sometimes required to allow therapy animals onto ICCSD property, but we want to minimize any negative effects on other students and staff in the building due to Redd’s presence. You may review ICCSD’s policy regarding Therapy Animals in the School District at https://www.iowacityschools.org/cms/lib/IA01903939/Centricity/Domain/80/100%20Series%20-%20School%20District%209.19.pdf.
ICCSD staff will meet with the owner and handler of Redd to determine the best way to introduce them to the building and classroom. Having information about any allergies or fears that affect others in the classroom is extremely important to the introduction effort and to determine whether accommodations need to be made for others in the classroom. If your child suffers any known allergies to, or has fear of, dogs, please contact your child's teacher or the Hoover office (319) 688-1110 so that our staff can include that information in its introduction plan. If you have any questions, please contact Kris Mowatt, Behavior Interventionist, or Carolyn Ceynar, Principal.
Parent Teacher Conferences
This fall, all Iowa City Community School District elementary schools will hold parent teacher conferences virtually on the following dates.
November 11, 2021: 2:10pm-7:10pm
November 17, 2021: 7:40am-7:10pm
We want all families to participate in parent-teacher conferences! Interpretation services are available. Please contact your child's elementary school office if you need a language or American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter.
You may sign up for a conference with your child’s classroom teacher through the Conference weblink below:
You will enter your child’s first and last name and use their birthdate as a password (MM-DD-YYYY). Once logged in, the first page the parent will see is a listing of the classes and teachers the student is enrolled with. The parent can schedule an appointment with each teacher by clicking the button on the right of the line.
Once you have signed up for a conference, you will receive an email confirmation along with a link to the zoom meeting.
If you would like the option of receiving information regarding your child's progress in specials classes, (art, library, music, and/or physical education) you have two choices.
One choice is to sign up for a virtual conference with any of the specials teachers. Please contact your child’s elementary school office by November 4, to have your child’s specials teacher(s) added to your conference schedule which will allow you to schedule a time with them in advance.
The second option is to email your child’s specials teacher to request a written report. This report will be emailed directly to you.

Music Student Teacher
The Hoover staff is pleased to welcome Ericka Barloon, general music student teacher at Hoover until early December.
Hello! My name is Ericka Barloon. I am a student teacher learning how to teach general music. I like to read, draw, sing, and thrift. I have a big orange fluffy cat named Hotdog and a partner named Chad. My favorite part about teaching is getting to know students and watching them grow personally and academically. I am so excited to get to learn at this school!

HEALTH AND SAFETY IN SCHOOL
COVID-19 Vaccines for children age 5-11
Children ages 5-11 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine following the FDA and CDC authorizations of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in this younger age group. This is the only COVID-19 vaccine available to children at this time. We are providing information to families on how eligible children ages 5 to 11 can receive the vaccine.
We are pleased to partner with the Visiting Nurses Association to hold walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics for students ages 5-11 at ten of our elementary schools. A parent/guardian must be present for a child to receive the vaccine. The schedule for those clinic locations is as follows:
- Grant Elementary (1000 Centro Way, North Liberty)
November 8, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Weber Elementary (3850 Rohret Rd., Iowa City)
November 8, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Kirkwood Elementary (1401 9th St., Coralville)
November 9, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Alexander Elementary (3571 Sycamore St., Iowa City)
November 10, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Hoover Elementary (1355 Barrington Rd., Iowa City)
November 11, 2021, 2:15-6:00 pm - Garner Elementary (80 Birch St., North Liberty)
November 15, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Shimek Elementary (1400 Grissel Pl., Iowa City)
November 15, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Lemme Elementary (3100 E. Washington St., Iowa City)
November 16, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Horn Elementary (600 Koser Ave., Iowa City)
November 17, 2021, 3:15-6:00 pm - Twain Elementary (1355 DeForest Ave., Iowa City)
November 18, 2021, 2:15-6:00 pm
Please note, vaccine availability may be limited depending on the doses allocated to each site from Johnson County Public Health. Each of these clinics will be providing vaccines to children ages 5 to 11 only due to the fact that the vaccine dose for this age group is different from the dosage for individuals 12 and over. We appreciate the collaboration of the VNA as resources remain limited. With only one nurse administering the vaccinations at each site, please be patient and courteous as visits could take longer than expected.
Below are additional local resources for scheduling an appointment if you or your eligible family members would like to receive the COVID-19 vaccine:
- UI Health Care will hold evening and weekend COVID-19 vaccine clinics at their Iowa River Landing location for children ages 5 to 11 beginning this week. Appointments can be scheduled at https://uihc.org/schedule-your-covid-19-vaccination.
- Mercy Iowa City Family Practice: Call (319) 339-3520
- Towncrest Pharmacy: Visit https://www.towncrest.com, or call (319) 337-3526
- Appointments may also be available through local CVS, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, or Walgreens locations.
- Your primary care provider may also have vaccination appointments available.
COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost; however, vaccine providers may charge an administration fee, which is covered by most insurance. For uninsured patients, this fee is covered by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.
For individuals seeking information about the COVID-19 vaccine, you may visit the JCPH, Mercy, or UI Health Care vaccine information websites. Specific information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and children can also be found here: COVID-19 vaccines for your child | University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner

Mask Requirement to Continue
Dear Families and Staff,
On October 8, 2021, a preliminary injunction was granted regarding the State of Iowa’s mask requirement ban. This preliminary injunction follows the temporary restraining order that was issued on September 13, 2021, and provides school districts in Iowa the ability to require face masks in schools. Based on this decision, the Iowa City Community School District will continue to require face masks for all students, staff, and visitors in our buildings and on our campuses.
This decision is based largely on the CDC’s strong recommendation that face masks be worn in schools, regardless of a person's vaccination status. This requirement also aligns with the advice of our local public health experts. We appreciate your support and collaboration in keeping our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner
