Elkins HS CCR Updates
Introduction to College & Career Readiness Success
What is College & Career Readiness?
Each Fort Bend ISD high school has a well-equipped College & Career Resource Center staffed by a full-time CCR Advisor. All students are welcome any time to explore careers, research postsecondary institutions and scholarships, and other activities to insure they are ready for post-high school careers. Parents are welcome too! Contact the CCR Advisor at your school to set up an appointment!
FBISD defines College & Career Readiness utilizing 5 pillars:
*Additional information about these 5 pillars can be found on the bottom left hand side of the following website: https://www.fortbendisd.com/Page/177
Elkins HS CCR - Mrs. Carter-McClain, Rm 447
I am starting my 18th year in education and my 7th year at Elkins High School. I serve as the College & Career Readiness Advisor for Elkins HS. I am dedicated to teaching students and parents about the college application and scholarship process with the hope of providing understanding during a process that many find overwhelming. I worked in higher education for a decade and in K-12 for nearly a decade. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University, receiving my Bachelors and Masters, and on the way to completing my PHD in Education Leadership, Policy, & Administration. My motto is: “If not you, who?; If not now, when?”. Find Mrs. Carter-McClain in the CCR Center ( next to the dance room) in rm 447, upstairs on the gold hallway where she will have a cup of Starbucks coffee in hand always.

Counselor Spotlight - Lead Counselor, Ms. Dina Powis, Office 402.
I am beginning my 20th year as a school counselor – time flies! I am born and raised in New York, where I worked for the New York City Department of Education as well as working in the Social Services arena while earning my Masters in Counseling from Manhattan College. I am now going into my 8th year here at Elkins and look forward to working with our students.
I LOVE volleyball – I played competitively for over 30 years. I also love cooking, grabbing a quick bite at Whataburger, and doing crossword puzzles!

LIBRARIES HOLD FREE “SAT” & “ACT” PRACTICE-TEST SESSIONS FOR COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS
Representatives from Princeton Review will conduct free SAT® and ACT® practice-test sessions at Fort Bend County Libraries in September.
The full-length practice-test sessions help students to gain experience and become better prepared for the actual test. The scores on these practice tests will only be shared with the student; they will not be sent to any educational institutions.
The SAT® test consists of three sections – Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. The practice test takes place from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, including administration and breaks. Those taking the practice test are encouraged to bring at least two #2 pencils. Examinees may bring any 4-function, scientific, or graphing calculator, as long as it is not on the prohibited list shown in the SAT Calculator Policy. The schedule of SAT practice-test sessions is as follows:
· September 14 – Sienna Branch Library, 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd, Missouri City.
· September 21 – Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway
The ACT® test is a multiple-choice test covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science, with an optional writing test. The practice test takes just over 4 hours, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, including administration instructions and breaks. Students should bring at least two #2 pencils. Examinees may bring any 4-function, scientific, or graphing calculator, as long as it is not on the prohibited list shown in the ACT Calculator Policy. The schedule of ACT practice-test sessions is as follows:
· September 14 – Mission Bend Branch Library, 8421 Addicks Clodine, Houston.
The sessions are free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Events,” select the library, and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the libraries: Sienna Branch Library (281-238-2900), Missouri City Branch Library (281-238-2100), or the Mission Bend Branch Library (832-471-5900).
*If unable to attend, please give a 24-hour cancellation notice so that others on the waiting list may attend.
