Covid19 Update

Thanks for your support as some of our Red Traffic Light settings eased this week. It has been delightful to watch our tamariki re-connecting with friends and siblings from other syndicates out in the playground!

Our absence rate is starting to decrease as more students return to school after periods of isolating or recovering from Covid19. School is open for those who are not required to isolate and are well. Our focus is on ensuring our school is as safe as possible for as many tamariki as possible to continue their learning onsite at school for as long as possible.

The last Covid Notice was published last week (#12) with information about changes to the Red Traffic Light setting. Thanks to the families who are sharing daily health updates with the office. Your information is appreciated and is helping us with our day-to-day planning.

  • We have a small number of students isolating at home because they are a positive case or a household contact (8%). Most are Pounamu or Rākau Nui students.

  • This week we have had 3-4 staff away each day or working from home. Our hybrid learning programme is fully operational.

Please contact the school if you have any queries - we are happy to help. Contact the school at principal@paparangi.school.nz or office@paparangi.school.nz or call 04 478 6617 (Mon-Friday, or leave a message after school or at the weekends).

Our tamariki have been working hard to use the GROW values this term and have earned enough kowhai tokens to fill the GROW basket! As a reward, Paparangi School will be holding a wheels day on Tuesday 5th of April. Tamariki may bring their wheels such as bikes, scooters and skateboards but please also ensure they bring a helmet. The rule is simple: no helmet, no ride! We look forward to celebrating the wonderful mahi and grit the tamariki have shown this term.

Enviro Day - Tuesday 12 April

Paparangi School's first 'Enviro Day' of 2022 will be held in week 11. The theme is Waste Free Paparangi where over the first three days of that week, tamariki from all syndicates will be focusing on revisiting recycling, composting, zero waste lunch boxes, litter bug prevention around the school and the tidying up and prep of our areas ready to plant, decorate or redesign! It is also a time where the Eco Warriors will introduce themselves and explain the new and exciting projects they are undertaking within the school.

A new initiative we are trialling is a Gardening Drive where students can bring a “donation” to Enviro Day of seeds, cuttings, bulbs, plant pots, plants, unwanted gardening tools, gloves etc. If you have any of these items going spare, we would love to have them! Please send them along to school with your child any day in week 11 and place them at the collection point outside the office where they will then be sorted and put to good use within the school. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the Enviro Lead Teachers, Sam Diggins or Christine Latimer sam@paparangi.school.nz (Y1-3) or christinel@paparangi.school.nz (Y4-6)

Pounamu Enviro Group Update

We have been really busy on Fridays during Enviro Time.

  • Room 3 have looked at our garden and planned all sorts of trees and plants we want to grow and eat. We are going to get a LOT of topsoil so we can refill our vegetable gardens and tyres ready for us to plant lots of yummy vegetables and smelly herbs.
  • The Garden Gurus have weeded and dug, pulled and tidied up the garden ready for this new soil. It looks amazing!!!
  • Room 2 has planned what creatures we want and don’t want in our gardens and have designed some bug hotels. We are looking forward to making these.
  • Room 5 has set up the worm farm and the Worm Warriors are ready to collect food scraps on a Friday to feed these hard working worms.
  • Room 4 has started cleaning up the compost bin area and we will be setting up Compost collectors to empty all of our food scraps from our lunch boxes into the compost bins.

Thanks to Stefan and Bob our caretakers, the shadehouse is all weeded, ready to put the new weed mat floor down. Next we will set it up to grow some seeds and cuttings.

We would love you to help us, if you have any plants, pots, tools, seeds, stakes or labels that are cluttering up your garage or garden. We would love to give them a good home!

Eco Warriors update

Kia ora e te whānau! So far this term, the Eco Warriors have been working hard on developing a plan for what Enviro initiatives and projects they would like to pursue this year. We started by taking a look at our school environment and how the current systems such as recycling and compost are running to see what areas needed our help. We also looked at areas in the school which could be developed and used these to gather inspiration for new initiatives. As a result, the Eco Warriors have organised themselves into six teams:

* Recycling Team

* Compost Team

* Wildlife Team

* Rat Trapping Team

* The Green Team

* Fundraising/PR Team

Each team is currently drafting a letter to you, our school community, outlining their developing goals and action plan of what they are hoping to achieve this year. First up to introduce themselves is the Rat Trapping Team!

Keep an eye out in future newsletters for more information about our awesome teams and what they are up to!

The board has determined that up to 4 places will be available for out-of-zone students in our third enrolment period for 2022. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone.

The third enrolment period for Term 3 runs from Saturday 9 July - Friday 30 September 2022. For students seeking enrolment within the third enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 9am, Friday 8 April 2022.

If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on 11 April 2022. Parents will be informed of the outcome of their application within three working days of the ballot being held. Details of how applications from out of zone students are processed are available on our school website.

Parents of students who live within the home zone and intend to enrol their child at any time during this year or next year please also notify the school as soon as possible to assist the school to plan appropriately.

This notice is published on the Paparangi School website, in newsletters and emailed to families who live out of the zone.
