Language Arts
- Battle of the Books: Students should have two books done at this point in the competition. I can't believe the number of students working toward reading all 8 books! Keep up the great work!
- Reading: We continued working on Greek mythology. Students are learning about the myths and common words in our language that allude to Greek mythology. We read about King Midas, Medusa, and Pandora this week.
- Writing: We continued working on a compare and contrast essay. We wrote about a Greek myth and an African folktale.
- Language: We continued working on prepositions and prepositional phrases. We also learned about common proverbs and their meanings.

Math
This week students applied what they have learned about equivalent fractions, simplest form, and common denominators to some challenging real world problems. They also learned some strategies for comparing fractions (greater than, less than, and equal to). Comparing fractions to 1/2 was found to be a very useful strategy along with making common denominators.
Social Studies
This week, students completed the lesson on agriculture in the Midwest by role-playing different people who would be affected by a farm auction, including the farm family, their neighbors, the bank, and a local store. Mr. Walstrom is our Junior Achievement volunteer this year, and he visited this week to talk about the different traits of an entrepreneur. We also started our lesson on the Southwest and completed a geography challenge.
Silly Photos
The kids are in the process of making a display for the hallway about proverbs. I took pictures of them with an "agingboth" app. They all wanted me to share their pictures with their parents, so I told them I'd put them in the newsletter. We all had a lot of fun with these. Enjoy!!
March is Reading Month
The students have been reading up a storm this month! Shay students met their goal of 31,000 pages already!! This means Mr. Fairbanks will be competing in the soaker cup this weekend at Nubs Nob! Soaker cups starts at 2:30, we hope to see you out there to cheer him on! If you have a Cat in the Hat hat, wear it to support our principal!
This means the students also earned the movie, "The Lorax" at the Lyric on March 23. We will be walking to the Lyric in the morning. If the students read an additional 10,000 pages before the 23rd, the Lyric has offered to donate popcorn and water for the students.
Thanks for all your hard work!
