Week 14 Recap
Last Call for the Silent Auction
We are excited for an incredible and action packed 4 days next week! We have a lot going on and are ready for our A+ School of Excellence site visit on Monday and Tuesday. We are honored to receive an A+ School of Excellence Site Visit for 2022. Earlier this year we received notification that our A+ School of Excellence application was accepted and earned a site visit with the hopes of Sierra Verde being renewed as an Arizona Educational Foundation "A+ School of Excellence" which we have received every four years since 2010. On Monday and Tuesday we have a group of judges visit Sierra Verde to make a recommendation to the AEF regarding our A+ School of Excellence status. We will get the results of this visit later this winter.
Our PTSO Silent Auction closes on Saturday night! Registration is now open for all our families. Every student who has an adult registered gets an entry into a squishmellow raffle! If you have multiple kids they each get an entry, if multiple adults register, that means more entries. Be sure to get your bids in ASAP and help us get our goal of raising $20,000.
Finally, our Veteran's Day Celebration Assembly is Thursday Morning in our MPR. Today is the deadline to get our photos to Coach Connolly to ensure that we can get our Slide Show ready for Thursday morning. Also, we would like to welcome all Veterans to our campus for our Hero's Breakfast at 8:30 am and the assembly at 9:00. We would be honored by your attendance, and ask that your RSVP for breakfast so we know how much food to order. As a reminder, Deer Valley Schools are closed on Friday in honor of Veteran's Day.
Happy Birthday Mrs. Morales!

Sierra Verde Welcomes our TSMC Families
As you may be aware, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is developing a large fabrication facility in North Phoenix within the boundaries of Deer Valley Unified School District. TSMC will hire hundreds of local staff members and is also bringing employees from their main location in Taiwan. Families began arriving in Arizona this summer and many more will join us this fall.
One of the reasons TSMC chose to locate their new U.S. Fab in north Phoenix is because they recognize that Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) has outstanding schools, teachers, and programs. TSMC families are excited about what our schools have to offer. In fact, students are registered at more than 15 different schools across DVUSD.
During this school year, SV expects to welcome approximately 50 students from TSMC families. We know it can be difficult for students to start at a new school, especially one in a new country. We want to welcome these students as we would want our own students to be welcomed if they moved to a new country, with a different culture and language.
Our staff laid the groundwork to welcome our new students and families to the SV community last year and have continued to provide professional development to our staff to support our students academically, socially, and culturally. Information has been shared with our students to give some background about Taiwan, Mandarin, and geography to help provide context to our students.
We have set up tours and school visits for families prior to their student’s first day of school. Our ELL (English Language Learner) team is assisting with the transition by helping with student and family tours, having exemplar buddy students and ambassadors assist with the transition to SV.
If your child is interested in being a buddy for one of our new students or you would like to find a way to assist with the family’s transitions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school’s front office.
We feel fortunate to have such a welcoming, wonderful school community and look forward to growing our Sierra Verde family this year and in subsequent years.
Positive Office Referrals for the Week
What is Bullying?
Is it being rude, mean, or is it bullying?
Reports regarding bullying are taken seriously on our campus. Teachers and administration investigate them thoroughly. No one has the right to create an imbalance of power or to make anyone feel unsafe on our campus.
It is so important for adults and children to know the differences between being rude, mean, and bullying. We hope to provide our parents with some helpful information to support what we discuss at school as well.
We highly encourage you to watch the following video with your child: Rude, Mean or Bullying
Rude = Inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else.
Mean = Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or inconsistently).
Bullying = Intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.
Strategies to empower your child
We thank you for your continued support as we challenge all those around us to be respectful, kind, and accepting.

Priority Open Enrollment 23-24
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. If you currently have an 8th grader that will be attending Mountain Ridge High School next year and Mountain Ridge is not your home school, you need to apply for open enrollment by December 05, 2022 for priority consideration. If you have another student starting school next year in any grade and your current student is on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Sierra Verde, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend SV next year, it is essential that you get an application ASAP and prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist most students if they apply after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online, no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4800.

Mindfulness Monday Challenge of the Week
Nature is always changing, evolving, letting go, adapting - these are beautiful lessons. If we are present in our lives, we can awaken our true nature and experience being more fully alive! Think of a time recently when you were touched by an experience of being with nature. Maybe you noticed the bud on a flower just about ready to burst into bloom, or the stillness and solidity of a tree you stood next to, or the gentle flow of water. By calling these qualities to our attention, nature supports our intention to be present. Practicing mindfulness in nature allows us to practice mindfulness with nature. Learning to experience awareness of the breath, the senses, the body, the mind, and the heart in a natural setting gives us greater access to our inner experiences.
Challenge this week: Everyday, make it a point to spend 15 minutes in nature. Spend that time opening your senses and just enjoying nature.
