Good afternoon SLMS families,
Now, more than ever, gathering evidence about learning is critical for teachers and families to assist with any potential learning gaps and/or look for opportunities to enrich student learning when evidence shows learning targets have already been mastered.
This fall, all LSR7 students in grades 2-8 will be taking NWEA, a standardized test designed to assess each student’s learning levels in both ELA and Math. NWEA is a state-aligned, computerized adaptive test, that is called Measure of Academic Progress (MAP), not to be confused with our annual state MAP test. SLMS students will begin testing with Math next Wednesday, September 30 at 8:30AM. Students will take the ELA assessment the following Wednesday, October 7. Returning SLMS students will be familiar with this test as they would have taken the test last year as 7th graders. All student testing will be proctored by their Homeroom teacher with assistance from both Math and ELA teachers. Each testing window for students is 8:30AM-11:00AM. Students will join their testing session using their regular Homeroom Google Meet class code. The majority of students should only need approximately one hour to complete and once finished, will be allowed to leave the Google Meet.
Below are a few additional details related to these upcoming assessments:
NWEA is unique in that it is “adaptive” to each child’s personal level of learning. That means that the more questions your child answers correctly, the more challenging the questions become. When your child incorrectly answers a question, the questions that follow will become easier. Therefore, your child’s assessment will be specifically created for his or her learning level.
MAP Growth helps teachers understand what students know today, so goals can be set to improve growth throughout the year. Students cannot pass or fail this test.
This test will not affect grades. In fact, it’s normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. Please don’t help them!
Given the challenges of learning from home, MAP Growth test results are especially helpful for us this year. These results will help us know what students are ready to learn.
Students should not be using their own calculator. The NWEA will provide a calculator in the program if it is a calculator permitted question.
Results from student testing will be shared with all families once testing for both Math and ELA have been completed. Thank you in advance for continuing to support your child’s distance learning needs. Please encourage your child to reach out to his/her Math teacher during upcoming class meetings if they have specific questions prior to next Wednesday.
Respectfully,
David Mitchell

SLMS Yearbook Needs Your Help!
Falcon Families, the SLMS yearbook needs your help this year with photos.
While we are in this virtual/online setting the yearbook staff cannot get into classrooms to take photos of students working on their daily work, projects, art, music, band, strings, PE, sports, etc.
Pull out your phone or camera and take some great shots for us to consider using in the yearbook.
Email your photos to SummitLakesYearbook@gmail.com
Please be sure to put your student's name, grade, and what class they are working on in the email.
Thank you from your SLMS Yearbook Advisors!
