Spring Party -- It's a Wrap!

Thanks to all who attended my recent party (and shared some of your great vegan food). I had such fun seeing all of you dressed up, and it was great to be able to meet some of your spouses and friends.

For those who are interested in learning how to make "pulled pork" barbecue, "tuna" salad, and other delicacies using the very nutritious and low-calorie jackfruit, check out the vegan jackfruit recipes shown on Pinterest. I get both fresh and canned (in brine) jackfruit at Vietnam Oriental Grocery on S. 3rd St. (near the Americana Apartments), but you might be able to track down the product at other specialty stores close to you. Also, you may want to check out the schedule for the V-grits food truck (vgrits.com) that makes appearances around town. Chef-owner Kristina J. Addington is the first vegan chef to win Food Network's culinary competition, Cutthroat Kitchen.

Interested in another card "reading" from Michael Frazure? You can reach him at 502.592.4984 or michaelfrazure@gmail.com. He charges $20 per reading and is available for parties.

New Research about Yoga and Osteoporosis

I was fortunate to participate in a professional development webinar that Yoga Alliance produced for yoga teachers around the country. In the webinar, Dr. Loren Fishman, medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and a yoga teacher, explained some exciting new research that will be released officially later this year. A very short summary is that active yoga (not the deep relaxation focus of yin yoga) builds bone, often as well as or better than common drugs such as Boniva and Fosamax, with none of the drugs' side effects. I've included one resource below that you might want to check out, and I'll post additional research when it becomes available. See also a two-part article that The New York Times wrote about Fishman in 2013 . I wasn't able to embed the link here, for some reason.

Changes to the Schedule

I have a few trips planned this summer that will affect our regular class schedule. Please note the days that correspond with your classes.

June 28-July 1: off to Philadelphia for a work conference. No classes on those days.

July 4: national holiday

July 17-20: off to Houston for a Pilates professional development workshop. No classes on those days.

July 24-31: vacation in Asheville. No classes on those days.

Please let me know if you have any conflicts of your own that will affect the schedule.

Jessica Goldstein Honored

You're used to seeing her fly on the Cadillac trapeze bar, but longtime Pilates lover Jessica Goldstein has another life as a dedicated and influential community volunteer. She recently received the prestigious Julie E. Linker Community Relations Young Volunteer Award from the Jewish Community Relations Council. Funny story, she looks so young that organizers didn't realize she was almost too old to receive the award! Read about Jessica's work in the article linked below.

Jessica also was one of the original members of the Sudanese Refugee Education Fund (www.sudaneseinkentucky.org), a college scholarship organization that I started more than a decade ago. When I stepped down as leader a few years ago, Jessica took charge and holds the group together today. Well done, Jessica!
