Brainstormers Assembly Energizes Students

Students were still talking about the Brainstormers Takeoff Assembly on Friday when several third graders were engaged in a lunchtime discussion of thematic ideas for play production on Friday. "I think I am going to write a story about how kids solve a mystery of stolen goods," offered one student. Another thought, "I think I am going to write about a week in the life of a student." The assembly was brought to Central thanks to a team of teachers who have worked to identify assembly programs that complement our school improvement plan. Additionally, some of those team members came together to write a grant, which was awarded in the amount of $1100, and combined with a PTO donation to cover the cost of the two-show event.

Thanks to Melissa Jones for leading the charge with several colleagues to bring this unique assembly to Central. Unlike many "one-shot" deals with limited effect, the Brainstormers Assembly provides teaching plans that will be used by all classroom teachers to meet learning activities suggested in our SI plan. The work that takes place over the next three months will make an impression on students as they author writings which will be brought to life on stage when Brainstormers returns in March with the Skywriters Show.

Ugly Sweater Styling Brings out the Best

Getting into the spirit of the holidays took on new meaning when staff members sported their "Ugly Christmas Sweaters" last Thursday. Rumor has it that Mrs. White sported the ugliest sweater (she was proudly wearing a ribbon to prove it!) but our own Mrs. Griggs took things to the limit styling special Christmas leggings as well. And to think I thought my New Year's Baby outfit was going to be the talk! :)

Teachers Partner to Bring Story Elements Alive for Students

Students in Mrs. Griggs' and Ms. McDaniel's rooms experienced a living vocabulary and meaning lesson when their teachers decided to construct a story setting featuring egg salad sandwiches, dump punch and the like. While discussing the story Because of Winn-Dixie Mrs. Griggs and Ms. McDaniel found students were having a hard time visualizing certain aspects of the story. Creatively they conspired to surprise their students with a recreated setting featuring foods/treats discussed in the story. While students were viewing the movie production of the book the two teaching partners transformed the hallway into a scene reminiscent of items described in the book. The look on the faces of students as they were invited to come out into the hall was priceless!

Thanks Jodi and Tracy for going the extra mile to make sure your students gained understanding and meaning through experiential learning!

Lunch Card Help Requested

The cash registers (computers) went down a couple of times last week. We ran into a bit of a problem as not all students' lunch cards had been sent to the cafeteria. Our younger students (especially first graders) did not know their numbers which further complicated matters and slowed the serving lines down. Accordingly, Mrs. Rodabaugh is asking for some extra teacher help in making sure lunch cards for all students are sent to the cafeteria with lunch buckets.

Thank you so much for your kindness and assistance in this matter. :)

Welcome Back Ashley/ Best Wishes Gwen

Please join me in welcoming Ashley Romine back to school. With her bundle of joy "growing like a weed" Ashley finds it is time to return although it is hard to leave her little one. Ashley, your school family understands and supports you as you resume your teaching role.

Likewise, we want to thank Gwen Lindsay for the wonderful job she has done while filling in for Ashley. Gwen has been a regular part of the staff and we certainly hope she will not be a stranger in our building as we move throughout the year. Gwen will stay on for the two days before the break to assist Ashley with the transition. Please take a moment to add Gwen to your preferred sub list so she will be able to return to Central as her schedule allows.

Wishing each of you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
