Tips for Parents from the Schools Health Office
Cold and Flu season is upon us! Many parents ask, “When is my child sick enough to stay home from school?”
This is not always an easy question to answer! We hope that these tips can help!
A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.
Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:
- Fever greater than 100.4 degrees, in the past 24 hours (Your child should be fever free without the use of medication for 24 hours before sending back to school)
- Vomiting in the past 24 hours
- Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school)
- Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night
- Head lice – until your child has been treated
If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school. It is essential that our district have a current phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness. If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify the district immediately.
Please call the school’s Health Office if you have any questions or concerns elementary extension 3167 to reach Kim, 3168 to reach Veronica, and high school 1411 to reach Lisa.

A Note from Mrs. DeCamp
Happy January!
We are back in the swing of our regular routines at school! A lot of our students and staff have been catching some of the viruses that are going around at school. Don't forget to take a look at the information from Nurse Mulikin above to help you determine when your child should stay home or can return to school after a sickness.
Don't forget, if your child needs to be absent for a sickness, please contact the school to let us know ASAP! We will be sure to document the excuse for you and it will let their teacher know why they were absent.
One way we are working to help keep everyone healthy in school is by placing hand sanitizer stations throughout our building. We have been working on teaching students the appropriate way to use the station but, along with proper hand washing with soap and water, this will help to decease the spread of any viruses that may find their way into school. You may also send sanitizer in with your child(ren) if you would like them to have their own to utilize throughout the day.
It is the goal of both Campbell Savona Central School District and New York State Department of Education to have all students in attendance at least 90% of the school year! We are hoping that continuing to teach ways to prevent the spread of sickness will support keeping our students healthy and in school!
We hope you had a restful long weekend and we can't wait to see your children on Tuesday morning!

Unplugged and still connected
For our children, technology is common place for them from a very young age. It is something seen and used in all the years of school. Like anything else, we as parents need to help our children to balance this within their life. At school, there are designated times that they use technology to complete tests, assignments and even to explore new things. At home, it can be the same thing. A few ideas are limiting the time spent during the school week for technology compared to weekends. Also making sure homework is done before being able to use technology. When it is family time, technology is put away for everyone until the time is over. All of these ideas help our children know that technology is only one part of their life and not their whole world.
