November 22, 23, 24 ~ Holiday ~ School Closed
Leverty Letter
A famous philosopher (AKA a celebrity from my youth, Michael J. Fox) once said, "Family is not an important thing. It's everything!" As we begin to spend time with family and friends this long break, it is so important that we spend quality time with people that are special to us. I'll be traveling back to Nebraska to spend Thanksgiving with family, and my wish for you all is that you have a joyous holiday break. Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, take this time to enjoy your family.
Best wishes,
Sean Leverty

LIBRARY MATERIALS
Montclair students are ENTHUSIASTIC readers!! THANK YOU so much for encouraging this and for helping them return their library books on time. This can be tricky. Because our specials schedule is on a six-day “rotation”, there is not a specific day of the week designated as “Library Day” for each class. I encourage students to return materials when they are finished with them and to renew items that they are still enjoying. Our CHECK-OUT period is two weeks and students are able to renew materials if they have the item with them. Beginning next week, I will be sending electronically generated emails home about once per month listing items checked-out to your student. This is a great opportunity to talk with them about what they enjoy reading and to check to see whether any items need to be returned or renewed.
RED TAILED READER - Optional Reading Incentive Program
Last week, we introduced our RED TAILED READER optional Reading Incentive program! Each student has been given a sheet upon which to record books read from specific categories. Please look it over with them and help them decide whether they’d like to participate. Students completing 8 books or tasks will receive a poster of themselves holding a book they love. Students completing all 25 books/tasks (known as a “black-out”) will receive the poster and be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card to Powells.
OREGON BATTLE OF THE BOOKS (OBOB) - Optional Reading Incentive Program
Students have been busy reading the books selected by the Oregon Association of School Libraries. Students have turned in contracts and are completing Book Response Forms (due November 27). Teams will be formed the week of November 27. Third grade students who have read three books and completed a response form for each by November 27 will be placed on a team of 4 or 5 students. Third grade teams will be formed by Montclair Staff. Fourth and Fifth grade students who have read four books and completed 4 electronic Book Response Forms by November 27 will be placed on a team formed by random draft. Thank you for helping your students who have opted to participate in this program. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students. Everyone wins!!
Several Washington County Libraries offer information and programs to help students prepare for Book Battles (beginning in January at Montclair). Take a peek at this link to the Cedar Mill Library! http://library.cedarmill.org/kids/obob

Play Fit Fun ~ Before School Program
Play.Fit.Fun is looking for more K-5th grade students to join our Tuesday Before School Kids Action Class!
This is not sports class or cross fit for kids.
It's all about action, movement, the Power of Play and FUN. THIS IS LIKE FIELD DAY CRASHED INTO PE…THEN BUMPED INTO TEAM BUILDING!
Kids have a blast head to toe competing with and against each other, challenging themselves and each other, running, dodging, jumping, sliding, laughing and more! They might even come home a little bit tired!!
Apart from the easy to identify physical benefits...the mental and social benefits are supremely strong!
- Find out more about our Kids Action Mission by watching our short video: https://vimeo.com/112888551

Play Fit Fun is a kid's action program that emphasizes the power of play and fun to keep kids active and healthy. To learn more, visit http://www.playfitfun.com/
It is super easy. The kids come to the school gym at 7:40am, right before school, where I will be waiting for them. The kids really love it! It works quite well...and the kids get huge benefits Physically...Mentally...Socially!
December classes are free to new families. Your child can try 1-2-3 classes for free, in order to get more of a feel for Play.Fit.Fun.
-
NOTE: Before the free classes ... parents need to email, call or text in advance...and fill out a waiver. There will be no financial obligation, unless you decide to enroll.

Inclement Weather Information/Emergency Closure Plan
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
Do you know what you’ve selected for your child’s emergency closure plan? It may be different than your everyday going home plans. If you are unsure, log on to ParentVue to check.
If school closes early, we send your child home according to this emergency plan.
· School bus home/neighbor/daycare
-or-
· Pick up by Parent/Friend/Neighbor/Relative/Daycare
Make sure you and your child knows their emergency plans. For example, if they’re going to a neighbor’s house, daycare, taking the bus or parent pick up. What are their names? Only those listed on the emergency contact list can pick up your child.
For the latest inclement weather information:
• Log on to the District website and a light blue message banner will be posted on the top of the main page with the status of District operations.
• Opt-in for SMS Alerts from SchoolMessenger
• Subscribe to Flash Alert for email or text message updates
