Principal's Corner

Dear Parents,

It amazes me that we have our first two weeks of school in the books! Your children and their teachers have been amazing as we adjust schedules and procedures to create the most orderly environment necessary for learning. Your patience with arrival and dismissal is much appreciated. Hopefully, once the school districts settle into their transportation routes, and our parent/guardian drivers adhere to the traffic pattern the school administration sent out, arrival and dismissal will run much more smoothly. We are fortunate to have so many children in Saint Andrew School; but, none that we want to risk losing. It takes everyone’s cooperation and attention to ensure their safety during these heavy traffic times.

Some of our new students informed their teachers they did not have homework in their other schools. Just so everyone is clear, Saint Andrew School students will have homework to do every night. We know from neurological studies, the information introduced in school requires repetition and practice until the knowledge becomes enforced in the brain. Our belief is that homework provides the opportunity for repetition and practice within a timely manner. Proper sleep is also an important element in learning. While we sleep, the brain is organizing and strengthening the connections of prior knowledge to new information. Recommended sleep times vary according to age:

· Preschool; 3-5 years need 10-13 hours per 24 hours including naps

· Elementary school; 6-12 years need 9-12 hours per 24 hours

· High School; 13-18 years need 8-10 hours per 24 hours

· Adults ages 18-60 need 7 or more hours a night

When the learner comes back to school the next day, homework is checked and reviewed. It is a cycle that is quite fascinating! However, it is work.

Page nineteen in the Parent-Student Handbook states the following time allotments for homework in each grade:

· 30 minutes a night for Grades 1 & 2

· 60 minutes a night for Grades 3 & 4

· 90 minutes a night for Grades 5 & 6

· 120 minutes a night for Grades 7 & 8.

Homework is not limited to written work. Students also need to study which may mean memorizing number facts, definitions, or spelling words. Memorization is the easiest form of learning; however, it does take time, effort & repetition. Aside from written and study work, Saint Andrew School students are expected to read for pleasure at least 20 minutes a night.

The administration and faculty understand that family life encompasses many other activities aside from school. This may require sitting down with your child to schedule homework time for the week. At the end of the day, the child should be good and tired, ready for a good night’s sleep!

We are so happy you have chosen to send your child to Saint Andrew School. Together we strive to bring the child to know his/her worth as a child of the loving God in whose image each person is created. It is an awesome task; one that we remain committed to doing.

May God be praised in all we do!

Welcome Back Event: Please join us on September 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the upper schoolyard to say hi and reconnect with our SAS family. Pretzels and water will be provided and a water ice/ice-cream truck will be on-site. This is a free event but please RSVP. A uniform exchange will be held in the hall during this time.

Fall Flower Fundraiser: St. Andrew Home and School is selling mums for a fall fundraiser. Please consider ordering a few pots to brighten up your garden and to help support our children's Catholic education! 8” pots are available in 5 colors for $9 a pot. Mums will be delivered on September 17th. The online store will close on September 8th.

Membership Fee: Our Home and School Association is an active volunteer-based organization that supports St. Andrew School in many ways. We fund many programs and activities that enhance the learning experience. To name a few, the HSA fully funds assemblies and speakers, assists in the purchasing of equipment and supplies for the school and teachers, and sponsors community-building events. Although this year will look different, we typically plan various events throughout the year, so that we can come together as a community to enjoy some social time with our families and friends. In order to fund these events, we do have a Home and School membership fee of $25 that can be paid online through the school’s website. With your membership, you will receive an online directory, and you will help provide learning experiences for our students.
