A Note from Mrs. Wilson

Happy Friday!

We've had a busy week here at CCS as we've gotten back into our learning groove after the Thanksgiving break. We have lots of exciting happenings going on in our classrooms in the next few weeks as we keep our students engaged in their learning before winter break.

With the weather changing, please remember to send your child(ren) into school with warm coats, hats, gloves/mittens, boots, and snowpants. In order for students to play in the snow, they do need snow pants and boots. We are not able to provide a borrowing system here at school, as have sometimes been able to provide in the past. This is due to covid restrictions that are still in place.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Jessica (Snider) Wilson, Principal

CCS Community Holiday Card Display

If families would like to participate in sharing their family holiday cards for the season, we would love to display them in the entryway for all to enjoy. Just send them in with your child so we can start hanging them up!

November Pizza with the Principal

Each month, teachers nominate students for Pizza with the Principal in order to recognize goals being reached, hard work, kindness, and adhering to our classroom and school expectations. I am so excited to have this celebration time back again! Below are photos of November's nominees. Rocky The Ram, our school mascot, was able to join us for the presentation of certificates! Let's all keep working hard and reaching our goals!

Third Grade Book Tasting

Third Grade turned their rooms into a cafe so the students could experience a book tasting. The students were able to rotate through six tables with each table having a different genre of book. They were able to experience new book choices by exploring new, or even familiar, genres. They brought their menus with them so they could record what books “tasted” best!

2nd Grade STEM with Cranberries

Our second graders participated in STEM projects using cranberries and toothpicks before Thanksgiving. Students worked on designing and building for the first day, and improving their first designs, creating new designs, and building their structures on the second day.

Band and Chorus Sign Ups!

Band and Chorus will be starting soon! Any student grades 5 through 8 can participate. In order to get an approximate count, there is an interest sheet outside the music room door for students to write their name on. These will be up until the end of the day on Tuesday 11/23. More details will come after Thanksgiving break. Contact Ms. Sherburne with any questions! msherburne@sau53.org

Family Engagement Ideas

Family activities can help children do well in school. Spending just a few minutes a week can make a big impact. Pick 2-3 from this list each week and have fun!

We'd love to see your photos of you and your families putting some of these ideas into practice! Share photos of your participation for upcoming newsletters to Laurie Jaquith ljaquith@sau53.org. Thank you!

  • Talk about your day. Who learned something new today? Students and adults are always learning.
  • Pick a word of the day and challenge family members to use it in a sentence.
  • Use drive time in the car to review spelling words and math facts.
  • Have your student write the grocery list for the week.
  • Use the grocery receipt to calculate the cost of different food categories: fruits, meats, dairy, etc.
  • Alternate movie night with a family reading night. Take turns reading out loud to each other.
  • Work on a puzzle together.
  • Talk about careers with your child. What are they interested in doing?
  • Exercise, getting enough sleep and talking about problems - all help when feeling stress.
  • Build vocabulary - work on a crossword puzzle together.
  • Spelling patterns - work though some word searches together.
  • How many ways can you write a number, 1+3, 2+2, 6-2 (all make 4)
  • Turn chores into a game. Number the chores, then roll a dice to see which one you have to do.
  • Share a fun memory with your child. Look through photos that may have captured that moment.
  • Positivity is powerful. Compliment your child on good behavior and attitude.
  • Have your child plan a meal and help prepare it.
  • Write notes to each other, especially during very busy times. Leave in a place your child can find it - lunch box, coat pocket, under their pillow.

Hello!

This is a friendly reminder that breakfast and lunch are free for all students through this school year. Unfortunately, this does not include any snacks, slushies, waters, or extra milks. These items can be paid for through your child's Myschoolbucks account or you are welcome to send funds to school with your child.

We do ask that you do continue to complete a free and reduced meal application, even though meals continue to be free for all students. Ravonne Eccleston, our Food Service Director, can answer specific questions that you may have. She can also help to get a hard copy of any forms to your child here at school. reccleston@sau53.org
