From The Principal
Happy Veteran's Day and thank you to all who have, or are serving. We appreciate you!
We have had an amazing two days of hybrid. Everything has gone super smooth! The only thing I am not satisfied with is the time we are taking to get you through the car line. We have made adjustments and will stick with those until Friday. If our time does not get better then we will go back to the drawing board.
One thing that would also help is to make sure you have your car tag that you got from Sunflower readily available and visible. If you do not have this car tag then we have to check ID and make sure you are an approved person for pick up. If you have another family member or daycare provider picking up your child, please make sure they have the school issued car tag with their dismissal number on it. We are also happy to provide you with more if you have multiple people picking up throughout the week.
Also in the morning, all students get let out in the circle drive and then they walk to their door. We will have staff helping them along the way. This way we don't get a huge back up and block the exit on to 27th Street.
We will move our morning community time to 8:40 since we open the building at 8:30, this gives us time to get students in their classrooms so they can participate along with our at-home scholars. Also just a reminder of our Wednesday Schedule:
8:40-Morning Community
8:45-Classroom morning meeting
9:00-Live lesson
The remainder of the day will be asynchronous.
Finally, we held our first site council of the school year last night. Below is a copy of our agenda and minutes. It was a very productive meeting! Thank you to all our members. Our next meeting is February 9th.
As always it is an honor to serve as the Principal of Sunflower Elementary.
Melissa Blevins
From The Office
Student pictures will be held next week November 19th and the 20th, with more information to come! We would like for our Sunflower distance learners to take pictures and be a part of our yearbook. We will send more information on times soon.
PowerSchool Contatcs
For safety measures please make sure we have updated contact information for both you and your emergency/pick up contacts. Anyone other than the parents picking up a student is required to be on the pick up list and have a car tag if picking up during dismissal. If you need to update your contacts please email them to Miss Zee.
Building Closed Wednesdays
Our building will be closed to walk ins on Wednesday's for deep cleaning. If your needing assistance over the phone or email you can reach Miss Zee in the front office at zellesha.whitley@usd497.org or 785-832-5870.
From The Counselor
If you would like your scholar/s to receive a FREE bag of food for the weekends, please let me know! The bags of food include non-perishable foods such as various snacks, cereals, canned soups, canned vegetables, and canned fruits. If you are interested in this free program, all you need to do is let me (Julie Heatwole, school counselor) know! I just need to know the first and last name of your scholar/s. There are no eligibility requirements or paperwork to complete. Each scholar will receive a bag of food each week of school, on the last day of each week! You may reach me on my direct school line #785-330-4860 or email me at jheatwol@usd497.org
From PTO
We hope everyone is having a wonderful first week of Hybrid! Please give us a follow on our Sunflower PTO Facebook page. We post a lot of information and events on our page.

We would again like to thank everyone who signed up and brought food and snacks for our hard working Sunflower teachers and staff during the parent/teacher conferences. We had an abundance of donations and were able to provide extra snacks during the transition to Hybrid. We appreciate your support!
Checkers/Hy-Vee Receipts and Box Tops
Now that our scholars have returned to the building, we wanted to remind everyone of a simple way to earn education funds for our school. Save those Checkers and Hy-Vee receipts and Box Tops! There is a collection container in the Sunflower main entrance vestibule.
