Principal's Update
The Maury Commodore Report February 8, 2021
Dear Commodore Family,
I am writing you with some updates and reminders for the week of February 8th, 2021.
As we begin third quarter, I want to take a moment to remind all students, parents, and guardians that we only have four and a half months of instruction left this school year. Students, please remember that attendance in live Zoom sessions is required in order for you to be marked present daily. In addition to logging on daily, you must continue to complete and submit all assignments. Please, do everything you can to promptly make up any missed work, seek help when needed, and ask about your grades. Email your teachers with questions and/or for support if you need it.
If you have not had your senior pictures taken, Hayne Photographers will be at Maury on Tuesday, February 23rd from noon to 3:30 to take senior formal portraits. The photographers will be located in the gym. Enter the gym from the back of the school. Sign up for a time slot. Please be advised that in the event of a virtual graduation, NPS administration will only display pictures of students dressed in formal attire. A $10 sitting fee applies.
Next month, our Juniors will be on campus to complete a state writing assessment which will serve as their required writing SOL for graduation. All other students who are enrolled in SOL classes will take their SOLs in May. Again, the writing test for all juniors enrolled in English 11 will take place in March, and all other SOLs will take place in May. More information regarding dates and times is forthcoming and will be included in the Maury Newsletter, on the Maury Website, the Maury Facebook Commodore Corner page, and the Maury Commodore Corner Instagram page. A detailed letter will be sent home. Additionally, teachers will email students with dates and times.
Following a discussion during the City of Norfolk’s School Board Work Session Wednesday, February 3, 2021, a decision was made to begin the fall athletic season for the following sports:
· Football
· Volleyball
· Golf
· Field Hockey
· Cross Country
· Sideline Cheerleading
· Competitive Cheerleading
· Cross Country
· Sideline Cheerleading
· Competitive Cheerleading
The football season will begin Monday, February 8, 2021. The remaining sports listed above are scheduled to begin Monday, February 15, 2021.
We realize that virtual learning and the ongoing effects of the pandemic are challenging to everyone. Please know that we always have the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our Maury students in mind and that the health and safety of our students and staff continue to be our top priority. As always, if I can provide any additional support or answer any other questions, please let me know.
Warmest regards,
Ms. Karen Berg

RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING
On Friday, February 5, Governor Northam urged school divisions to provide students with the option to return to in-person learning by March 15. Shortly thereafter, Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Byrdsong, and School Board Chair Dr. Martin emailed a joint letter to families letting them know that a plan for returning to in-person instruction will be presented to the School Board by Wednesday, February 17, 2021. The final decision is still up to local school boards.
While we do NOT have a date set for return to in-person learning, your Maury High School administrative team has been working since September to prepare the building for students to have a safe return. Our efforts and information about returning are on our web site here.

UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION IN SYNERGY!
For parents not receiving robocalls, you need to be sure phone numbers are correct in synergy (aka parentvue). Click on the link below and update your information if you have already not done so. We would like to make sure that we have the most up-to-date information in synergy. Thank you.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
It is important for your child to attend their virtual classes every day. When a student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, he or she misses critical instructional time and learning opportunities. This often has long- term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time.
Attendance is part of the state accreditation status. In order to remain fully accredited, students must attend their virtual classes every day.
Questions? Contact our attendance technician, Ms. Edwards at kedwards@nps.k12.va.us
or Mr. Lawrence at hlawrence@nps.k12.va.us
