Kindergarten News:
Mrs. King's Class News
This week we continued to learn about three ocean zones: Sunlit Zone, Twilight Zone, and Midnight Zone. We created animals that live in each layer. We ended the week making a plan for an animal we would create to live in a zone of our choice. We will explain why our animal will live in the zone we choose.
We have been learning about all the strategies we can use to help solve addition problems. We are solving word problems using these strategies. We have created problems to solve with partners. We are also learning how to write addition problems.
The weather has been beautiful and we have enjoyed our outside time this week!
Kindergarten ended the week with a trip to the fire station! Thank you Chatham Fire Department!

During our creative writing process we used peer editing to check both for content, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
We then read our essays to our partner to check whether our details in our pictures matched our writing.
Our focus was on the use of adjectives. The children loved writing about monsters!

Art Room News, From Ms. Middleton:
Kindergarteners continued our unit on the ocean. We made “Above and below the surface” paintings. We began by painting oceans using short expressive strokes to create waves. We then glued them onto blue construction paper to create the calm below the surface. The children used white colored pencils to create detailed, underwater renderings of sea life. They finished their pieces by making sailboats to go one surface of the ocean paintings.
Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Dates for Grades 3 and 4
In Person and Remote Grade 3 and 4 ELA: Thursday, May 27, 2021
In Person and Remote Grade 3 and 4 Math: Wednesday, June 2, 2021
MCAS tests are required by state and federal law and are an important tool to promote student success and educational equity. In addition, MCAS test results will
· give information about areas of learning that have been most impacted by the pandemic,
· provide important data on which students, schools, and districts have been most affected by pandemic-related changes in schooling, and
· improve understanding of your child’s knowledge and skills in relation to the state’s learning standards, so that we can provide the best system of support and instruction in future years.
The format has been modified this year, and both in-person and remote students will be required to take the assessment. However, students will only take one session each of Mathematics and English Language Arts. This is half of the traditional expectation. Each session is schedule for about 2.5 hours to allow all students sufficient time to understand the directions, answer the questions and review their answers. Students will be given both a mask break and a stretch break during the session. Students that finish early will have indepedent assignments to cmoplete at their desks.
For students taking the assessment remotely, the content and interface will be the same as it is for in-person testing. Students and families in distance learning have received a letter outlining the expectations for space, device usage, and monitoring unique to this environment. If and when possible, it will also be important that adaquate Internet bandwith is available so limiting other device usage during this time is recommended.
Testing accommodations stated in a student's personal needs profile will be in place, and if applicable, will also be available for remote testing (some accommodations can only be admistered in person so if you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or liaision).
Lastly, these testing dates have been pushed back into late May and June due to the pandemic. Thus, it is important that students are present for these assessments as there are fewer than normal make-up days allowed. Please let your child's teacher know if there is a planned absence, so we can make arrangements for your child's testing schedule.

Community News:
A RESOURCE FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND AGENCIES WITH PUBLIC HEALTH QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS
You may have heard about an exciting community book drive that we are running in collaboration with Yellow Umbrella Books and Where the Sidewalk Ends Bookstore until the end of June. The goal is to get as many books as possible into the hands of Harwich and Chatham children whose parents might not be able to afford to buy them. The love of knowledge starts with reading at a very young age, therefore books change the trajectory of children's lives!
The project is gaining momentum and we'd like to get local parents involved. We are looking for volunteers for weekend afternoon shifts to stand outside the bookstores and inform people who pass by about the book drive. You'd be provided a table, chair and full set up, including information about our Monomoy Family Resource Council / Center as well as copies of the Cape Cod Chronicle newspaper article about the book drive that you could offer to people while talking with them. Here is the link to the article: https://capecodchronicle.com/en/5618/chatham/7206/'My-Favorite-Book'-Drive-Aims-To-Donate-Books-To-Local-Families.htm
As a volunteer, your goal would be to get as many people as possible to go into the bookstore to buy a children's book to donate to the book drive. Every person who buys and donates a book would receive a raffle ticket.
The raffle prizes are:
- A night for two at Chatham Bars Inn (off season) with breakfast included
- $100 gift certificate to Yellow Umbrella Books
- $100 gift certificate to Where the Sidewalk Ends Bookstore
The raffle drawing will be:
- June 29th at the Chatham Angler's baseball game,
- or if it rains on the 29th, then on June 30th at a bookstore.
The general overview of the way it works onsite is:
- The person you talk to goes into the store to select the children's book of their choice
- They pay for the book in the store, and when they do, they tell the employee they are donating it to the book drive.
- The employee then gives them a raffle ticket to fill out.
- The customer fills it out at the counter inside.
- The customer brings their children's book and raffle back outside to your table.
- They drop the book in the basket on your table and their raffle ticket in the raffle box on your table.
- You thank them and remind them that the raffle drawing will be on June 29th at the Chatham Anglers baseball game and that they'll receive a PHONE CALL if they win. (They do not need to be at the game or even in Massachusetts to win.) You can also remind them that all the details are in the copy of the newspaper article that you handed to them.
Two parents who already volunteered said their experience was fun and rewarding! On Saturday afternoon alone, they got 102 books bought and donated by standing outside of Yellow Umbrella Books and talking to people as they passed. 102 books! That's a lot! Just think of how wonderful you'd feel if you could pass along that many new books to the kids in your community.
If you would like to volunteer please reply to this email indicating what weekend date(s) and time(s) you prefer Noon - 2pm or 2pm - 4pm AND if you would like to be assigned a companion, prefer to volunteer alone or will you be bringing a friend?

You will receive a confirmation email as well as unending gratitude from the recipients of a new (possibly, favorite!) book!
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in helping out with this fantastic community project!
Lastly, I will leave you with this quote:
"A house without books is like a room without windows."
