A Message from Michigan State President: Moria Brady
Hello, Michigan, C.A.R. families and friends!
I hope you all had a fabulous fall and hope for an even better winter. As M.S.C.A.R. State President, I am so thankful to all who attended the fall board meeting/costume party. We had fun and learned more about our national theme and project—just a reminder to sign up for the Home Run for Heroes to help support our national project deadline is November 15.
Time to get excited! Plans are being put in place for our 2021 State Conference on February 19-20 in Bay City at the DoubleTree by Hilton. We hope all societies can be represented and acknowledged for their hard work.
Speaking of hard work, M.S.C.A.R. continues to do our part as we honor our brave and noble patriots. Even though we cannot be together, we are working as a group to make a change. Look for more new ideas and activities to support the state and national programs in this issue of the Wolverine.

A Message from Michigan Senior State President: Deb Davis
Hello everyone,
While on vacation in southwest Virginia this holiday, I remembered one of my favorite excerpts from the NSDAR “125 Years of Devotion to America”, a compilation of reflections and prayers devoted to our American way of life. “Faith, family and love of country” are foremost in mind within this collection and I hope you enjoy the following one.
“True patriotism is not necessarily a spectacular or heroic act in time of war. Patriotism is a normal feeling of constant allegiance to one’s Country. It is the love we have for that Country for which our patriots fought to give us liberty and freedom. It is the driving desire to make ours a better Country in which to enjoy these freedoms from any type of attack…
Remember that patriotism does not just happen in the mind and heart of a child, but like a belief in spiritual values, it must be taught. Let us make sure that our children are well versed in American History-that they develop a love for their great Country-its unselfish heroes-its historic traditions-that they understand and feel true patriotism- that they, in truth, grow up to be Good Citizens. The future of this nation will soon be in their hands. It is our responsibility to see that they know how to keep it great, strong and free…
Let us, now, re-dedicate ourselves to preserving our liberty and freedom. Let us start reclaiming the American dream of “”government of the people, by the people and for the people”” which, under God, shall not perish from the earth. Let us spread the gospel of Patriotism to our friends, to our neighbors, to our schools, to our churches, to our courts and in our civic activities.”

National President's Project 2020-2021: Support our Brave and Noble Patriots
“Support Our Brave and Noble Patriots” is inspired by a line in our C.A.R. Song, which was written in 1928 and continues to represent C.A.R.’s ideals of patriotism and support for our veterans.
The National Society will be partnering with Pets for Vets, a 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds to place companion animals with veterans, many of which are experiencing PTSD. The animals are adopted and trained through donations, and each companion animal is highly trained to best meet the veteran’s needs.
Pets for Vets assists in the veterans fight against PTSD through building a safety net with the animal, creating connections, and overcoming trauma. Veterans apply for an animal through Pets for Vets and go through an interview process to match the veterans with an animal. Animals are then selected from the shelter specifically for each individual veteran and are trained before being placed with the veteran. Through this process, Pets for Vets helps to save pets from shelters, as well as provides veterans with the companions and support they need.
Through this year’s National Theme and Project, C.A.R. members are encouraged to give back to those who have served our nation and Support Our Brave and Noble Patriots.

Hi Everyone!
My 2020-2021 Veterans Committee Project is to ask C.A.R. members to interview a veteran. It can be a local veteran in your town or a member of your family. Before you start your interview - be sure to have your questions ready. I have included some sample questions after my article.
When you are finished interviewing the veteran, be sure to contact me and my Senior and let us know who you interviewed and what you learned. Also - If you have any pictures of the veteran or you interviewing the veteran, be sure to send those too!
Veterans Name?
Rank?
Branch of Service?
Dates of Service?
Job Description(s)?
Special Skills You Learned?
Where You Served?

Hello, Michigan C.A.R.!
How is your Merit journey? Remember the National Merit Program Packet was sent to ALL Sr. Society Presidents, courtesy of the 125 Committee, earlier in the fall. Plus, it is available online to everyone. AND, M.S.C.A.R. State Conference is February 19-20, 2021, where the Michigan Society of the year will be announced.
Don't worry -- your society has time to receive oodles of awards at the State Conference. In this issue of the Wolverine several State Chairs have included information on what you can do to support the National Program. For the Seniors planning and organizing your society events, the State Award Planning Guide is included too.
Finally, Mrs. Huber and I are thrilled with the excitement and enthusiasm of the Michigan Societies. Keep the questions coming!

Hi!
One of this year’s conservation projects is learning about and support rails to trails in our area. Rails to trails are Railroad trails that have usually been converted from a railroad to a bike and walking trail. Sometimes, the trail runs next to a railroad track and sometimes it replaces it.
In Michigan, there are 132 total rail-trails which make up 2,476 miles of trails. There are currently 24 active rails to trails projects with a potential of adding 219 additional miles. This chair would like to challenge you to explore a nearby rail trail before the end of the year. Tell us about your experience by emailing Sadie122.sh@gmail.com.

Hello!
In honor of National Native American Heritage Month (November) here are a few facts to help us celebrate the culture and heritage of the indigenous people of America. Plus, some projects your Society help to celebrate:
1. Michigan comes from the Ojibwe word mishigami which means “large water” or “large lake”. What names in your town or city are derived from the native Americans language?
2. There are three major tribal groups in Michigan: The Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa (Odawa) and the Potawatomni (Bodawotomi). A great place to learn more about them is on Central Michigan University’s website which can be found here.
3. The D.A.R. and the C.A.R. support two American Indian Schools through the American Indian Committee – Bacon College and the Chemawa Indian School
a. Consider hosting a food drive during the month of November to raise goods for the two schools. Full lists of items needed can be found on the Members’ DAR website, ask a Senior to help you look it up.
Kaia Hodges; American Indian Chair (Continued)
4. Have you ever seen a dreamcatcher? Many believe that they are capable of trapping the bad dreams you have and only let the good ones through.
a. Did you know you can make a dreamcatcher of your own? Here is a great tutorial on making a dreamcatcher. You can show your dreamcatcher project in our next newsletter or on the M.S.C.A.R Facebook Group.
5. Legends – some of our family’s favorite stories come from Native American Legends, with our favorites surrounding Mackinac Island and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. The Mackinac Island Blog delves into many of these legends. Here is one on Sugar Loaf.
Kaia Hodges; American Indian Chair (Continued)
For older children and with parental guidance.
To celebrate the Native American culture in our United States is a great thing to do, but it should not happen with out recognizing the struggles this populations endures to this day. Indigenous women and children suffer at a higher rate of violence than other populations might. It is estimated that they Native Women are murdered and sexuality assaulted at rates as 10 times higher than other areas in the US. It is also of note that these crimes are mostly committed by people outside of their community.
A report issued this summer discussed more than 2300 missing Native American women and the girls in the United States. In order to learn more about missing indigenous women and children, this chair suggests contacting a local tribe and having one of their leaders come and speak to the Society. They will be able to provide age appropriate discussions and education. This chair also feels that while we will be able to advocate, this will also give us the opportunity to amplify voices that need to be heard.

World War II Navy's WAVES CODE GIRL
Hi:
Ethel Louise "Cricket" Wilson Poland who celebrated her 101st birthday on October 10th, 2020. Cricket a World War II Navy's WAVES CODE GIRL. She held a top secret clearance and was one of 10,000 women working in Washington D.C. to decode numbers and characters to decipher location of enemy German U-boats and Japanese ships. They helped us win World War II.
The Elias Cady Society, NSCAR honored our WWII Female Veteran by recruiting our members and other local Michigan C.A.R. Societies to write, color, draw, use stickers on postcards to give Cricket 200+ postcards designed by Lola Detroit of Illinois DAR Society.
We had a huge community drive-by parade at Cricket's rural home in Rochester, Michigan. We had Fox 2 Detroit send a cameraman to interview Cricket for about two minutes during the parade of vehicles including to police cars with lights flashing and sirens. The TV interview was shown that evening at 10:45pm.
