>>January Organizational Meeting: Newly elected School Board members Sally Trnka, Josh Gorham and Jill Lofald, along with newly re-elected Rosie Loeffler-Kemp will be seated. They join David Kirby, Nora Sandstad and Alanna Oswald for the next two years.
Mid-Year Budget Adjustments Avoid Layoffs - The district received updated information from the Minnesota Department of Education regarding final enrollment numbers from the 2016-17 school year. They came in higher than expected and allowed moving forward with plans for a mid-year budget adjustment without layoffs. According to Superintendent Bill Gronseth, "We now have a plan that avoids layoffs and allows more time to work collaboratively toward long-term financial solutions."

Howes Recognized for Leadership
The Duluth School Board honored Edye Howes, recipient of the 2017 Administrator of the Year Award from the Minnesota Indian Education Association, recognizing her leadership, her work in the American Indian Education Community, the reflection of American Indian culture in her life and work and her many achievements.
Edye is coordinator for the ISD 709 Department of American Indian Education. Under her leadership, the Department has helped develop the Misaabekong Ojibwe Language Immersion program at Lowell Elementary, supported Misaabekong Curriculum retreats, organized American Indian Day at Ordean East, partnered with Myers-Wilkins and Piedmont to host pow-wows for students, staff and families, partnered with Denfeld High School to host a Community Round Dance and more.
Edye, thank you for all you do to educate, teach and inspire young Duluth learners every day. Congratulations!
Many thanks to the Area Partnership for Economic Expansion (APEX) and member companies for their support of the Duluth School District’s Construction Technology program. The Boldt Company, APi Group, Inc., United Piping, Inc., The Jamar Company and Northland Constructors assisted by donating cold weather work gear and safety equipment.

Denfeld, Duluth East Career & Technical Education
Inspirational
Denfeld students, members of the community and visiting artist Jonathan Thunder worked together this fall to create a mural of Chief Joseph Osaugie, Fond du Lac Band. They unveiled the mural this week during a special event at Denfeld High School, where the artwork will be displayed.Thunder’s award-winning work has been featured in many state, regional, and national exhibitions, as well as local and international publications. The project was made possible through support of the Duluth American Indian Education Department.
Keeping Up! Duluth Public Schools PE Staff are working on curriculum updates in swimming, dance and cross curricular activities. Thanks to curriculum coach Sandy Chesley for sending along photos.
