A Note From Mrs. Mathe

It is my sincere hope that all of you are able to enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday with the ones you love (however that may look this year). The changes COIVD has brought brings an added stress to many families. Even through I am missing many of my family traditions this year, I have learned to appreciate the things I do have. I hope you are able to find joy this next week, and maybe make some new Thanksgiving traditions.

With that being said, as we enter the Winter Holiday season, there will likely be many opportunities for students and families to gather outside of school with friends and loved ones. During this time, please remember the importance of taking precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks, frequently washing hands, and social distancing. We all must work together as partners to balance the need for social interaction and celebration with keeping our schools open to in-person learning. Our partnership is critical in order to keep students and staff safe and in school throughout the holiday season. Should your child test positive for COVID-19 over the Thanksgiving Break, we ask that you email your child’s campus at contactpowell@conroeisd.net so we can provide the appropriate support and make the required notifications.

I would to take some time to revisit bus safety. This video is a good reminder for parents and children about how to be safe around school busses. Please share this video with your child to help us all be safe.

Individual Picture Retake Day

This week you should have received your child's fall pictures. We offer an opportunity for pictures retakes one time a year if you are not satisfied with your child's pictures, or if your child missed picture day. On December 4th, if you want your child to re-take their fall pictures, please return the original picture packet in it's entirety. If your child missed the original picture day, you may go online to purchase your child's picture packet (or request a paper order form from your child's teacher). Please be sure to let your child's teacher know that they will need to take pictures this day. We do not send every child to the photographer, so if the teacher is unaware, your child will not get sent to take their photo.

Remote learners: This will be your last opportunity to have your child's fall pictures taken. We use these pictures for student IDs, for the school yearbook and much more. The photo booth will be available in the foyer of the building from 8:00-10:00 on December 4th. You simply need to pull to the front of the building. Once at the front of the line, let your child come inside the front foyer. Once they have taken their picture, you are free to leave. Paper order forms will be available if needed.

How to Order Online:

1. Go to http://online.phototexasphotography.com

2. Use online order code: PTPUC

3. Select your school (under the October 2020 section)

4. Enter your email address

5. Select desired package and follow instructions to pay

Attendance Updates

This year attendance taking procedures have had to adjust to account for 2 learning platforms. Thank you for your patience as we've had to make adjustments to our systems to meet the needs of this new learning environment. Below is a bit of information regarding the processes that happen when attendance is taken at school.

If your child is an in-person learner and is absent from school, the classroom teacher marks them absent. The school district has an automated phone call system to notify families of students that are absent from school. So on any day your child is absent from school, you will receive a phone call alerting you of their absence. If you have notified the school of their absence, and we excuse the absence, you will still receive the phone call, as we are unable to go in and mark the excuse until 24-28 hours after the missed day.

If your in-person learner is absent, but participated remotely, they will initially be marked absent from school. The next morning it will be changed to a remote present. This is due to the fact that the state allows students to participate remotely until 11:59 pm for attendance purposes. Teachers "check" remote attendance each morning for the previous day.

If your child is a remote learner, they are counted present if they participate remotely, by 11:59 pm daily. If your child does not engage in learning in a 24 hour period, they will be marked as absent. You will receive an automated phone call from the district the day following the absence to notify you that they did not participate. There is a lag in the calling system due to the fact that the state allows remote learners to work up until 11:59 pm to receive credit for that days attendance.

Whether remote or in-person, families are still held to the same standard for attendance. Compulsory attendance laws require students to be present for at least 90% of the school year to receive credit for any given year. Please refer to the Conroe ISD Student Handbook for more information regarding compulsory attendance laws (page 23).

The most up to date attendance information can be found on your child's Parent Access Account (PAC). If you do not already have one set up, please visit https://pac.conroeisd.net/ to create your child's account.

Dreambox Information for at Home Use

You may have noticed last week on the Powell PTO Facebook that PTO funds purchase DreamBox Learning for all Powell students. This is a K-8 digital, rigorous, and highly adaptive math curriculum that students access to supplement school math instruction. DreamBox adjusts and creates a "just right" lesson for each student.

It is recommended that students should complete 5 lessons each week. Most of the students complete enough lessons at school to meet this recommendation. While DreamBox can be used at home, please keep in mind these tips.

  • Be okay with mistakes. As long as students complete lessons, DreamBox will be able to assess their comprehension and adapt.

  • Work independently. Helping a student through a lesson can progress them beyond their current abilities and lead to frustration.

  • Only use the virtual manipulatives. DreamBox lessons are designed for students to think through problems without the use of pencil and paper.

  • Use the help/hint button when needed.

  • Use headphones with the volume on.

  • Monitor time. 30 minutes a session is adequate. Students should not work longer than 30 minute sessions at home.

We hope you find the tips helpful! We love to see so many students excited about practicing their math skills!

Self-Regulation Chart

As the "most wonderful time of the year" season approaches, sometimes it is not so wonderful. Sometimes this time of year comes with added stress for many children, adults, and families. Our CISD counseling department shared the graphic below to show some ways to self-regulate when certain feelings occur. Sometimes we can all use a little reminder that it is okay to stop and take care of ourselves.

Children in Santa's Dream Toy Drive

Our CISD Police Department would like to invite you to help us make a child's dream come true. On Monday, November 30 - Friday, December 4 the CISD Police Department will start collecting "NEW" unwrapped gifts for boys and girls of all ages. These gifts will be wrapped and given to families who, without our support, may not otherwise have a wonderful Christmas. In 2019, Children in Santa's Dreams provided gifts for 803 children in 310 families in Conroe ISD.

If you would like to donate a toy, please have your child drop off the unwrapped present in the front office at Powell Elementary the week of November 30- December 4.

Powell Elementary Counselor Form- Request for Assistance

Hi Powell Parents! I am Mrs. Nixon, the Counselor at Powell Elementary. This will be my 10th year as the counselor at Powell. My role on campus is to work with students, parents and teachers to provide a positive environment where students can become lifelong learners.

Another part of the counseling program is coordinating resources for students throughout the year. In order to meet the needs of our students I will need a little information from parents. This form will help guide me in providing families with the needed resources.

Nominations for Gifted and Talented Testing

Nominations are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January for both remote and in-person platforms, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or teachers.

All 2nd grade students will take the CogAT assessment in December. It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child. The CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment.

If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher at conferences. Referrals will be accepted through December 18. The referral form is attached and will need to be completed and emailed to Sarah Radford at sradford@conroeisd.net. Your child may also return a printed copy to their teacher that can be turned into the front office.
