Spartan Spotlight
April 2020
Greetings Spartans!
Spring is here and it has a completely different feeling than was anticipated just a few short weeks ago. The focus earlier in the semester was the Red River, will it or will it not flood? The forecast is now for a crest below 30 feet. Who would have guessed this?
What is our focus this spring? A pandemic of Covid-19. Schools are closed, businesses closed, and complete lockdown in some areas.
This year we adopted a baseball theme here at North High. Based on that theme, we have been thrown a curveball. Not a big round house curve, but rather a Hall of Fame curveball like Bert Blyleven used to throw. In his Hall of Fame career he struck out 3,701 hitters, many on his curveball. We didn’t strike out on this curveball. Instead, we have responded like professionals and created a completely new educational plan which rolled out on April 1st. Educators have been working relentlessly defining the essential learning outcomes they need to deliver. They have had hours of professional development on how to deliver their lessons so students can learn and be successful.
No, we have not struck out. We have stepped to the plate and are going to deliver a new distant learning system for your students’ education. There will be some swing and misses and there will be some home runs along the way. We will be making adjustments as needed as we move through this new experience.
We need to work together as a united team to find success for all of our students. Thanks for your support as move through these unprecedented times.
Sincerely,
Mark Blanshan
Assistant Principal
Letter from the Counseling Department
Dear Fargo North High Parents/Guardians:
We hope that you are doing well, staying healthy and adjusting to new routines. As your student(s) are beginning this new learning experience, the FNH school counselors want to let you know that we are still available to support you and your students. The FNH counselors will continue to assist with growth and development in academic, career and social/emotional areas.
FNH school counselors will be available during school hours, Monday through Friday for collaboration and consultation, with students, families and educators. The counselors will also work with families for referrals and additional supports, as needed.
FPS counselors will be utilizing video conferencing, email and/or phone services to communicate with students and families. Calls will likely show up as unknown or restricted. If you are not able to connect with us, please leave a message with the best time for us to connect with you.
There are many benefits of tele-counseling services; however, there are potential risks with this technology as well.
Considerations for Tele-Counseling Services:
- The video connection may not work or it may stop working during the tele-counseling session.
- We cannot guarantee full confidentiality due to the nature of online communication and/or lack of control over end-user security.
- We encourage a quiet and private space for your student where they will not be disturbed or interrupted during their tele-counseling session.
If you have questions or concerns about your student’s use of tele-counseling, please email or call your student’s counselor.
Below you will find contact information for the Fargo North High Counselors.

COVID–19 Risk Assessment Tool
There is a new assessment tool available – the COVID-19 Risk Assessment Survey – that the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has created for those who have COVID-19 symptoms and are unsure whether they should seek medical care. The online survey is designed to help residents determine if they have COVID-19 symptoms and identify close contacts, which are defined as people you’ve been within 6 feet of for more than 15 minutes.
As a reminder, symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath. These symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
Please follow these guidelines:
- Stay at home if possible.
- Use 6 feet social distancing.
-Wash hands frequently for 20 sec. with soap / water.
-If soap/water not available, 60% hand sanitizer.
-Avoid touching your face.
-Cough / sneeze into elbow.
-Frequent surface cleaning.

Distance Learning Plan FAQs
Spring Activities
The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) has provided direction for spring activity participation due to the closure of North Dakota schools by Governor Burgum. The direction provides limitations for coaches and directors and is effective indefinitely. For the full directive, please visit the NDHSAA website. The NDHSAA will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary.
For FPS families that have paid spring activity fee(s), the District will hold these fees until a final decision on the spring season is made by the NDHSAA. If the season is cancelled in its entirety, the District will place these paid fees into the student’s lunch account for the next academic year; for graduating seniors or students transferring out of the district, these fees paid may be transferred to a sibling’s lunch account or refunded, upon request.
Reminder: Upcoming School Out Day
All Distance Learning classes will resume on Monday, April 13.
Selective Service Registration
All male students are required by law to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. To register go to SSS.gov. You can preregister at 17 years and 3 months of age. Why is this so important? If you fail to register you are unable to receive federally funded college loans and grants; are unable to get into federally funded training and certification programs; are barred from all federal employment; ineligible for many state and local government jobs. Can’t stress enough - 45 seconds online registering at SSS.gov can save a man 45 years of headaches and heartaches.
School Board Filing
Candidates interested in running for one of four positions on the Fargo Board of Education may submit an application until Monday, April 6 at 4:00 p.m. Applications need to be submitted to the Fargo Public Schools Business Office by the deadline at the District Office, 415 North 4th Street in Fargo.
During the closure of the Fargo Public Schools District Office to the public due to COVID-19, those interested in filing for one for the four seats on the Fargo School Board are asked to make arrangements to submit paperwork prior to the April 6 filing deadline. Potential candidates should contact JoLynn Mathern at 701-446-1027 or matherj@fargo.k12.nd.us to make arrangements.
PTSA Monthly Meeting
PTSA needs the following officer positions filled at its May election meeting for the 2020-2021 school year: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. If these positions aren’t filled, the Fargo North PTSA may cease to exist. For more information or contact Keith Berg at keithberg@hotmail.com or 701-235-6930.
At this time we will not be having the regularly scheduled meeting for April. When the date for the next meeting is decided information will be sent out.
